Try removing the battery, insert Pearl WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY PRESSING and HOLDING the "PLAY" button for about 5 seconds. Windows Device Manager should see the device under "Human Interface Devices"as a "USB Human Interface Device". Run the latest firmware update, it will see the HID device and initialize it as a "Disk Drive", "_Generic MSC Recovery USB Device". Once the firmware update is complete the Pearl should work again. The trick was to remove the battery and hold down the "Play" button while inserting to force recovery mode.

I plug in my RCA TH 1602-A and it won't even

I just fixed my RCA Lyra TC1602A MP3 Player. It had two problems:

  1. When connected to various computers the USB device is not recognized; and
  2. When turned on, the device software freezes and will not load (can only be turned off by removing the battery).
I went to the following link, downloaded the firmware to my computer, double clicked on the exe file and followed the instructions below VERY CLOSELY:

http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2243/page/12/r_id/103795

Troubleshooting (info from exe files):

If you see the "Initializing..." message displayed for the Player for more than 5 minutes, or your Player cannot be upgraded successfully, please try the following steps:

Step 1: Without closing the Update Device Application, disconnect your Player from your computer.

Step 2: Reset your Player
a. If your Player uses AA or AAA batteries, remove them from the Player
b. If your Player uses an internal battery, press and hold the POWER button for 10 seconds

Step 3: Hold down the PLAY key on your Player and connect it to the PC via a USB cable.

Step 4: Release the PLAY key when a progress bar and text, "initializing" appears on the Players display. If you cannot see the "initializing" text, please disconnect your Player and try again.

Step 5: Click the START button in the Upgrade Application button as described in the steps above.

This worked for me and I was just about to mail my unit for repair. Please note the Repair Dept number is 1 866 449 7112.

I hope this has helped you.

I have a mp3 rca lyra radio and mp3 player. It

Do you have the RCA LYRA PEARL, with the folding out usb plug? RCA has made bunch of different mp3 players and has reused the LYRA and the PEARL name. Mine has both names on it, and the firmware file below is for model numbers TC- or TH-1602 or 1604.

One time I replaced my battery and my unit would not go any further than the Pearl logo. So, I downloaded the firmware upgrade from http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2243/related/1, and followed all the troubleshooting instructions that popup when you start the program:

start the program,
remove the battery,
hold the play button while plugging into usb,
release the play button the the term "initalizing" replaces "searching",
check the box that says "format data" (you can try it first without this checked, it may work and will save your music),
click the start button to replace the firmware.

After I did this, my pearl started normally, and my computer recognized it again.

My rca 1602 is locked up it shows pearl in the window and the menu button will not work

It sounds like there is a firmware corruption and need to be reflashed. Be sure to back any important media up before installing the firmware as it can remove all media from your device. You can download the firmware files here:

Try a firmware recover. Download the firmware update from the RCA website and install the app. Start the updater and connect the player holding the PLAY button until it gets detected.
This is a similar player with the recovery procedure explained:

RCA pearl th1602-a with new battery will not power on. Old battery will power on, but freeze at pearl logo. Player powers on when plugged into USB of computer. It is already at the latest firmware.

When was the last time you flashed the firmware? Even if it already has the latest firmware, it sounds like it is still corrupted and need to be reflashed. It appears you already know where to find the latest firmware update based on your comments, but just in case you can download it here:

RCA pearl 1602-A won't register when plugged into USB port.

When my computer wouldn't recognize my Pearl, these are the steps I followed after downloading the firmware upgrade from http://voxrightnow.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2243/related/1

remove the battery,
start the program,
hold the play button while plugging into usb,
release the play button when the term "initializing" replaces "searching",
click the start button to replace the firmware.

You might want to try leaving the "format data" box unchecked the first time. If that doesn't work and allow you to backup your music, bite the bullet and format the data area.

After I did this, my pearl started normally, and my computer recognized it again. It also fixed my aac-error problem.

It will not play music

I was having trouble with my daughter's MP3. The RCA website said to download Pearl Firmware (Version 2.) (http://support.rcaaudiovideo.com/downloads.aspx?product=25). I did, several times, but it would not work. Finally, I cheked the box "Format Data Area" under Download options. Once I did this my computer immedialty saw the Pearl and I was able to re-load all my daughter's songs in Media Player.

I hope this helps. I was so worried that I was going to have to buy her a new player.

the rca pearl does not have an external power source, only the AAA battery. Just put in a new AAA and you're good.
