When I connect my WD 320GB MyBook (the one with blue lights) to power and then to my macbook the lights come on, but it never pops up on my desktop. When I put my ear to the HDD I can hear a soft click...

That clicking sound is the read/write heads stuck and banging against the either the side wall or the drive itself. This drive is DEAD. I am a former Geeksquad agent and we would see this all the time. Geeksquad does have a data recovery service but it is extremely costly. It was $70 to send it out to the service and then it would cost at least $400 on up to $1800. We actually had a quote come back for $1800 once. like I said costly but if you Absolutely have to have the data that should get most of it back. Also, try using Carbonite at carbonite.com it is a one flat annual fee and you always have your data safe and secure on their servers. Good Luck.
