Question about Dyson Genuine DC-21 "Stowaway" Spare HEPA Filter, Dyson

1 Answer

The power head of my DC 21 keeps cutting off as soon as I start moving the hose around. The only way to get it going again is to step on the main switch on the canister, then the whole cycle of off and on starts again. I have replaced the entire power head and tested the continuity of all the wires in the hose and they are good. The repair shop says the PCB is bad but can not get one. What can I do ?

Not much. my only suggestion is to dig through the internet and try and find that pcb it may take awhile but it would be worth a shot. if you dont think you can make the repair take it to repair shop with new pcb and let them do it.

SOURCE: I have a DC-17, about

There are several things that this could be. Probably the most common problem that we see when customers come in with this problem is actually a fairly simple problem to fix. Here are just a few things that this could be.

The fist possible problem is a VERY common problem actually.

Possible Problem #1. The first problem is extremely common. In fact, we probably see between 2-3 of these problems every week. It mostly happens after people take the bottom plate off the vacuum in order to clean the roller brush. What happens is when they reinstall the bottom plate, they put it on on incorrectly.

It's actually very easy to do. When the bottom plate (soleplate) is installed wrong, there will be a gap between the bottom plate, and the agitator housing, or the purple tray the roller brush sits in. This will cause the soleplate to be a few inches higher off the ground then it should be, preventing the brushes from even hitting the carpet.

This makes it seem to the user that vacuum has lost suction power because without the brushes hitting the carpet, the machine will not pick up very well on floors, but when they use the attachment hose there's plenty of suction power.

Most likely your switch has gone bad, and you'll need to replace the on/off switch on your Dyson DC07. If you have to hold down the switch in order to keep the vacuum on, this is indicative of needing a new switch. Unfortunately this is very common problem on the Dyson vacuums. The switch that Dyson uses for their vacuums is one of the cheapest quality switches on any vacuum on the market today. The good news though is that this is not a extremely difficult repair to fix.

I took pictures of replacing the switch assembly on one of our customers repairs they brought in. It was having the same exact problem that yours is, it just wouldn't stay on. Here's how you can fix the switch on your Dyson:

- T15 Torx Bit Screw Driver
- Genuine Dyson DC07 & DC14 Replacement On/Off Switch Part 901181
- Needle Nose Plyers
- Patience (haha)

The switch above is actually a link back to our site if you have yet to purchase the switch yet. We carry most every Dyson part.

IMPORTANT: MAKE SURE YOUR VACUUM CLEANER IS UNPLUGGED BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE!

SOURCE: I have a DC 21

Sounds like a loose power connection someplace on the machine. Probably needs to be looked at by an experienced repairperson.

Proper Hose Length Sizing for Swimming Pool Pressure Cleaners

Belive it or not... too many swivels add to the problem!
Most people think if I add a swivel right here, where it begins to coil then tangle, it will fix the problem, but yet the problem remains!!!

The manufacturer recommends this for the proper layout of the hoses; from the wall all the way to the head:

If the hoses are old, they may no longer be pliable enough? You should replace them with new ones: 1 section Clear Soft Hose, and 2 sections of White, not so soft hoses.
  • First, determine the deepest part of the pool/pool "Depth"
  • That is how "Long" the 1st hose is to be. The softer clear hose
  • Now... Attach all the hoses together, 1st hose already cut per the above and the other two "White" hoses - UNCUT.
    • Place the head at the point on the deck where the wall adaptor is for the hose to attach
  • Walk around the pool holding the wall adaptor
    • Move your hand forward towards the edge of the pool to mark the total length of the pool, if you come to a point where your hand is over the water, hose is too short, move your hand back, if your hand is too far back away from the waters edge, the hose too long
  • Once you get back to the starting point, you should now know how long the hose needs to be. You could probably have 1' - 4', maybe more maybe less? Take note of the excess hose, that will need to be cut off, too long of hose will only tangle up. BUT WAIT, THERES MORE....
    • You may think that I now just cut off the excess length? You would be wrong!!!
    • Lets say you have 4' of excess hose...
    • Follow the hose in your hand to the next swivel, disconnect it.
    • NOW Cut. But... cut off 2' from one of the white hoses, AND 2' from the other white hose.
    • Reconnect the swivel. You have now cut off 4' of excess hose.
Recap: What you have done is with the 3 pieces of hose is cut it & adjusted it to the correct lengths. The soft hose is as long as the pool is deep. The two White Harder pieces are Exactly Even!! The way it should be!

Now, the Back up valve will be placed on the soft hose about 3-4' away from the head.

Follow this and the hose should not tangle. And...
Heed any advice about storing the hose coiled as it is not good, As this advice will be ABSOLUTELY CORRECT!
Whenever storing, always store in a straight line, otherwise it will retain the memory of the coil. If this has already happened, then take hose & stretch over the deck in the sun for the better part of the day, this will relax the hose & erase any memory of the coil.

Good Luck

Have suction but belt not moving

Are you referring to the drive belt on the power head? Remove the power head and try vacuum without it, if it picks up fine, the problem in in the power head/hose assembly, could have a blockage inside the head of the hoses attached to the head. If those are all OK, look for an air leak in the system. at/around the bag, canister, loose clamps, etc.

The telescoping wand on my Dyson DC 25 will not retract back into the hose.

Hi Nina, it's Jack at Dyson.

Difficulty collapsing the wand can mean that the plastic handgrip section hasn't been correctly placed on the machine. When you replace the wand on the machine, make sure the handgrip section clips onto the main body and is down as far as it will go.

It's also a good idea to make sure that the hose isn't twisted, as a twisted hose can create resistance as you try to collapse the wand. Remove the wand again and allow the hose to untwist itself fully before attempting to replace the wand on the machine.

I'm confident these steps should resolve the issue, but if you would like some further guidance after you've given this a try, please give us a call on 0800 298 0298 (UK), 1-866-693-9766 (US), 1-877-397-6622 (CA) or 1800 239 766 (AU).

Canister vacuum keeps turning off, can push buttons on wand handle to restart but shuts off again as soon as you start to move handle

its sounds like the problem is either the power head wire which when your using it and twisting it left and right, turns it off.. Or it could be in the hose where the connect meets with the unit.

Open up the power head and check the toothed corners where the power head sits - it sounds like thread has caught up at the sides which can only be removed by opening up the powerhead to clean it.

This is a problem with the hose, and unfortunately it will require replacement of the entire assembly.

The SES-125 hoses produced in the general vicinity of late 2002 had a tendency to start building up static and kicking the motor off after a few years. The problem was rectified, and the more current hoses do not have this problem.

Head to your friendly neighborhood Miele dealer and get a new hose, and this problem will not occur again.

Power head stops and starts

Sounds like there is definately something stuck inside it. You;ll need to dismantle the floor head carefully using a screwdriver. Make sure your machine is switched off though if it is a power head and not an air turbine turbo head. Once inside check the main roller brush as well as the side caps as these can become clogged. Also check the main dirt channel leading to the pipes of the vacuum.
Dont forget to rate, thanks.
