Question about Denon AVR-3801 Receiver

3 Answers

My Denon AVR 3801 shuts off at even moderate volume.

Denon AVR 3081 hooked up to Infinity IL 25-C, 2-IL 30(rear), and 2-IL 60(front). It was previously hooked up and would only shut off at really high volume. Now, however, it shuts off at even low volume.

It was one or more of the speaker connections. All were rewired and the only problem we have now is when extremely high volumes shake the house and cause the disc to skip. We can jam once again!

    Thank you, MrMark52! You rock!

Welcome to Fixya! Have you checked the Cooling fan? If the Cooling fan is not working it will kill the Unit Rapidly as Stated Above. If the Cooling fan is ok or if it does not have one. The Power supply is bad and will need to be Replaced.

You've either got a bad speaker somewhere, or you've made poor connections to the Amp or at the speakers, causing a short.

My Denon AV-3801 will just turn itself off if volume is turned up. I have checked for crossed wires and such, not sure what is going on. Any answers?

Disconnect all speaker wires at the receiver, then turn it back on. Turn up the volume. If it shuts down, it needs to be serviced. If it stays on, reconnect speakers one at a time and turn on the receiver then turn up volume. When you find the speaker that causes the receiver to shut down, disconnect the wire at the speaker and re- test. make sure wires are separated. If it shuts down, replace the wire, if it stays on, meter the speaker itself to check for a bad vioce coil. If you don't have a meter, you can take the speaker to any audio shop or Radio Shack and they will usually test it for free. Hope this helps.

Poor DTS/DD5.1 from the AVR-3801

I also run 2 AVR 3801`s in my home, These are nice receivers, excellent build quality, about the DTS and DD 5.1 not up to par, I would check the Menu speaker set-up, be sure and make sure you have rear surrounds set up at surround speakers, NOT the rear speakers, they are for a 7.1 configuration, then set up the white noise test signal to balance all 6 channels, you need to have the powered subwoofer balanced properely, if no results of improvement then check your digital connections, I would recomment the fibre-optic, but the coaxial works also with great seperation signal, last I would investigate the playback unit of the DVD or DTS CD player, something in your set-up is amiss and you can acheive outstanding surround with this model of Denon, I can attest to this for my past experience setting up HT systems even with High End Outboard processors I always am amazed at the 3801 output quality, remember the 5 ch stereo is a Matrix DSP not even close to a true digital sound, and as for more amp power sure it always helps to have extra but the 3801 are true 105w @ 8 ohm 0.05 THD and are real, should power you Missions, the next level are denons 4800`s and 5800`s at 125 and 175 but I would stick with the 3800 and be content. Hope you have some better results after tweaking your settings.

Avr Shuts down at high volume

It does that because there is a safety feature in all the newer devices. If your system is turned up to high you would blow your audio outputs or speakers. That's why it shuts off.
