Question about Canon EOS 40D Digital Camera

1 Answer

Black images on the screen

Hello, I have bought a CANON D40 camera and when I used it for first time I took normally about three photos and after that all the photos I would take would just show black. After that I have formatted the memory card again but it would not work. I bought a new memory card but again after three or four photos which showed normal the rest were all black. (Everything else seems to work fine). I don’t know what I have to do now and I hope that you have the answer to my problem.
Thanks in advance, Panayiotis Gregoriou.

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras, particularly for the SD1000. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, sometimes with lines, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open). To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

By the way, my wife's SD1000 also has this problem every once in a while. I easily fix it by using the following steps from the link: powering on the camera, opening and closing the battery door, and flicking the end of the lens barrel with my fingertip (or you can tap it with a pencil as discussed in the link).

I am not sure whether this feedback will work for me or not but still I must say that I am totally dissatisfy with canon DSLR camera and it?s service that is available in Kolkata. 16 months ago I bought...

Believe it or not, most cameras come with "factory dust" just waiting to float onto your sensor. Cleaning it is quite easy with the right tools. Google the words..."cleaning a DSLR sensor" and you will find numerous sites that will explain the procedure with pictures and they will list places to obtain the equipment (which is not expensive and once you have it, you can clean your sensor anytime you need to).

Red line on every photo taken with Nikon D40

And your question was?
A new CCD for £128 - that is a total bargain. If you think you can buy a camera half as good as the D40 for RM750 you are deluded... although I agree that the CCD shouldn't have gone in such a short time - I would guess that Nikon UK would have repaired it on good faith - as long as the camera was obviously in otherwise good condition.

I have the same basic problem.

The camera sensor is bad. It can be replaced if you still have warranty. If its out of warranty, get a new camera - the cost to repair = cost of new camera.

Nikon D40 Turn camera on, and it used to display the photo I was ready to shoot. Had this feature for a few weeks, now I only get the menu and a black screen How can I get that display back?

If you were seeing the image before you shoot, there was definitely something wrong with your camera.

The D40 does not have a Live View feature. The display is for menus, shooting information, and image review. Not preview.

No, the so called 'live view' ( seeing pictures in real time on your LCD monitor ) is available only on the latest models that are coming out now ( Canon D40 and Nikon D3 and D300 have this feature ).
