Hello make sure that the needle is a front or side loading in the needle bar. the easiest way is to tell take the the needle with the flat side turn to the right or the left and see if it sides in either way hope this helps

HOW DO I CHANGE THE SEWING NEEDLE

There may be a tiny knob or screw that holds the needle in place. Loosen that and pull the needle out noting which direction the flat side of the needle shaft is facing. Choose the appropriate new needle for your project's fabric and insert the needle with the flat edge of the shaft going the same direction as the one you removed. Tighten the knob/screw and you are good to go. If you get interrupted or forget to note how the old needle came out, you should be able to look up into the needle holder to see where the flat edge goes.

The thread from the spool breaks immediately. Does it need a particular kind?

Upper thread breaks
needle may be in backwards
Raise the needle bar to the highest point then loosen the clamp screw to remove the old needle, place the new needle in the clamp with the flat side to the back of the machine
Push the needle all the way up to the stop or as far as it will go, then tighten the needle clamp screw
upper tension may be to tight
the needle may be bent or damaged
thread may be hanging up in bobbin case--check area for loose threads or lint

The thread keeps on snapping when i sew straight stitch?

try changing the needle
Correct needle insertion is mandatory for proper use of your sewing machine.
Raise the needle bar to the highest point, then loosen the needle clamp screw to remove the old needle.
Place the new needle in the needle clamp with the flat side of the needle facing the back, (round needle, the groove in the needle should face away from the shaft).
Push the needle all the way up as far as it will go. Then tighten the needle clamp screw.

try adjusting the top thread tension-to see if the tension is too tight
rethread the machine--top & bobbin just in case the thread is caught some where
check to make sure there aren't any burrs on the needle plate

clean under the needle plate area & in the bobbin area for lint or loose threads
if these suggestion don't help then it would be a good idea to
take the machine in for a check up

I am not sure how to replace my broken self threader hook, to put in a new hook for my 2040 model, Pfaff sewing machine?

If your talking about the needle threader, it just simply slides on to the stainless steel shaft and snaps on. You might have to adjust it a little if it doesn't line up with the eye of the needle. To do that you need to remove the side cover of the needle bar area, and loosen the 1.5MM allen screw that sets the stop for the threader stop. It is located near the top of the needle threader bar.

The knob on wheel stuck.

Remove the needle, and place a screwdriver or something like it under the needle bar to keep the wheel from turning.
Wrap the knob in some type of fabric to keep it from being marred.
Using channel locks or water pump pliers, grasp the knob and turn it to the left. It should come loose. Once it is loosened, try it 2 or 3 times to make sure it works as it should.
Wind the bobbin, insert a new needle and have fun again.

The needles are changed by inserted the hex wrench into what looks to be holes on the front and left side where the needles go into the machine.I'm not sure what size the hex wrench is but it's pretty small. From the manual,
"Removing Needle: Unplug the machine. Turn the handwheel counterclockwise to raise the needle bar to its highest position. Loosen the needle clamp with the allen wrench and pull the needle out." and
"Inserting needle: When the neddle bar is at the highest position, insert a new needle in the needle holder, making sure that the groove of the needle faces you. Push the needle as far up as it will go and tighten the needle clamp screw." "Removing Needle: Unplug the machine. Turn the handwheel counterclockwise to raise the needle bar to its highest position. Loosen the needle clamp with the allen wrench and pull the needle out."

The machine takes DB x 1, or 1738 needles, and a size 14 needle is recommended.

Hope this helps!
