Question about Dell OptiPlex 760 MT Desktop Computer

1 Answer

How do I fix "Optiplex 760 failed at checkpoint [WRIT]" ?

I just got this computer. I was told that it was in perfect condition with just a few cosmetic wears and tears. That was not the case. The warranty is expired and I can't afford to renew it. I recieved the computer and booted it up. Not 2 hours into using it, it crashed. Just completely shut down. And would not reboot. I left it alone for a half hour and came back to see if it was working. It turned on but said this at the boot screen. "Previous attempts at booting this system have failed at checkpoint [WRIT]." Any ideas? Please help.

This computer has known issues with the USB hubs which will throw this code. If you used a USB hub for a monitor or such it may have crashed the driver. Have you tried booting without any USB devices connected? If not please try.

SOURCE: Dell 8400. previous attempts at booting this

It is a Hardware error, and my be associated with the following components.

  1. Memory. Try Memory modules individually, see if you can get the system to boot normally with one or more modules, if you ID a defective one, replace it.
  2. Motherboard. It is possible, that if all combinations of the memory produce change that a failure has occurred in the motherboard. A swollen capacitor is a likely failure.
  3. The hard drive has a cache module, it is possible this memory is defective.
  4. The Processor (Least likely as they almost never fail.)

Try running the Check Disk Utility.

To run the check disk utility you will need a repair disc ora operating system disc. Put the disc in the cd drive and boot fromit. You want to get to the Dos Command Prompt (Black screen with whiteletters) and type the following command: chkdsk /r
Check disk will run well over an hour or two and you will notice thepercentages going from high to low, this is normal. Let it run tocompletion. Then reboot machine.

If check disk fails to solve your problem you might have to reinstall windows.Try doing a Repair Install that way you don't loose your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs.

In windows xp you get to the dos command prompt by selecting R for repair whenthe options appear.

In Vista and Windows 7 you want to get to the recoveryconsole and look down at the bottom of the window for the Dos Command.

you need to cover all using a aluminium sheet and discover the graphic chip. and heat it for 30 seconds. heat it making circular movement.
you can replace the mother board your self , and bought a used board and u will save a lot of money.
ebay have used and warranted parts for computers.
contact me if need more details , or if u have more info about your problem to figure it.

Where does a dial up modem go in a Dell optiplex 760?

The dial-up modem would install inside the computer in a PCI slot. VERY easy to install but a couple considerations before doing so... There are different sizes depending on whether the OptiPlex is a mini-tower or small form factor case. Also - you would need drivers for the modem that are compatible with the operating system you have installed on the computer.

Booting failed at checkpoint [WRIT}

May be a cpu problem. Make sure the fan is on the cpu and that it is running. If the fan is running you may need to change the thermal compound that is between the cpu and heat sink. If that doesn't work , the next step would be to try to use another cpu that you know is good and see if it fixes your problem.

How to turn off beeps on anOptiplex 760? Thanks.

I've got a few options that will work for you here. They are outlined below.

1.When starting up the computer, start hitting F2 to enter the BIOS.

Look under "Integrated Devices" and you will see system speaker there, and can be turned off. 2.Open up the case to your Optiplex (Simply push down release tab and remove side cover). Locate the system speaker, and unplug it. 3.Go into device manager. Right Click "My Computer" and select Manage. Choose "Device Manager" from the left side. a. Click View >Show hidden Devices.
b. Expand "Non Plug and Play Devices"
c. Double click "Beep"
d. On the Driver Tab set the "startup" type to "Disabled"
e. Reboot. Let me know if this fixes your issue. Look forward to hearing from you soon.

Alert! previous attempts at booting this system have failed at checkpoint [WRIT.] -- Optiplex GX270 Dell Computer

I'm not sure right off hand what the WRIT means. But other articles online seem to think that you should hit F2 at boot and check the Boot Order. One guy set it to CD and booted a CD (a bootable one) fine. I would make sure it set to the first Hard Drive. He also said something about: went to the "event log" section and cleared the last event (actually the only one showing). I saved the settings, then booted up again and this time it booted up normally.

* Anyway new hardware external or internal would be 1st suspect in this kind of thing. One person had problems after adding a new printer that had a memory card in it. Apparently the Dell tried to boot from the memory card.
