You may find that as Mac uses a different standard for VGA output, the sync will be on a different pin not recognized by the TV.
You may need to purchase a Mac to IBM adapter from a computer store.

There is no audio because HDMI connection between Macbook and TV does not support sound. The HDMI you used does not have audio. In order words, you are not using the right/correct HDMI cord.
You need to connect with a single cable that carries both audio and video like the Kanex iAdapt® HDMI V2 - Mini Display Port to HDMI Adapter with Audio Support, or the Dr. Bott 9180-MDHK - Mini Display Port to HDMI Adapter II, both of which are linked below.
So endeavor to get any of the above cord and problem should be solved.
