Toastmaster B1042 toasts only one side of one slice and both sides of other slice

I have 2 identical toasters...and both are doing the same thing. they have a bagel switch on them. The element that does not glow red is the outer one on the side that is for "one slice". Same same both toasters. Any thoughts?

STUMPED IN VERMONT Thanks for all the good thoughts. I was thinking that the bagel switch might be stuck on, but it is not. I have 2 of these Toastmaster model B1042 two slice toasters and both have the same identical problem. The outer element on the slot that is marked for "one slice" only does not lite up. The other 3 elements all lite up.

I was thinking that if it was the bagel switch then both the outer elements would not lite up. It is strange..both identical toasters and both with identical problem. By the way, elements all look in great shape and both toasters are relatively clean. Power cords are also in excellent condition.

I would be happy for any other thoughts. Thanks, Jon

That is strange. Jon, the only other thing I can tell you is to call the mfr. they should be very accommodating to you. This is unique with 2 toasters.. Sometimes when we hear hoof beats, we don't think of zebras. It may be something you or I have not thought of. Good luck and let know what they say.

The is by design. The bagel side only heats on one side because of the bagel not needing to be toasted .

SOURCE: tfal 2-slice toaster repair

look inside your toaster. there must be something inside it turn it down and see if something comes out.. if nothing is inside then try to see if the cord that you switched on is not broken. if you see a liitle bit scratch mark on it- switch off. You can get a electric shock. it is your favorite toaster so try to consult a electricion to fix the cord for you.

SOURCE: only toasts part of bread

The solution I got from the FixYa team was: "Get a new toaster." Which is how I ended up with 4 new toasters that don't work. I'm glad I didn't PAY for THAT answer.

The bread only toasts on one side (each piece)

I take it it that the outside is being toasted and not the part between the slices? That would mean that the element that is shared by the two slices has burnt out. Check with a dealer for a replacement.

Please ensure that the "Bagel" function is not selected (LED is not lit up). The Bagel function will toast one side of the bread while only warming the other side.

Sounds like the element has failed. Not much you can do as even though they cost more than a 2 slice, parts availability is slim and none.

You will need to move it to a different outlet that is not on the circuit that you are using or just toast 2 slices at a time.

if you mean the toast itself doesn't toast on one side, check that both heating elements have about the same resistance value. One could be twice as conductive as the other and not heat as much as the other side.
If you mean the other two slots don't toast, the problem could be in the switch or in the elements themselves. check carefully the continuity of the toaster across the (unplugged) ac power connector while you push the toaster load handle down on each side. If the resistance is significantly larger on the problem side, the problem is either the switch or the elements. The problem is usually with the switch becoming corroded or oxidized. The switch is supposed to be self-cleaning, that is, it wipes itself as contact is made to help remove buildup. Sandpaper both contacts until they shine copper colored. Otherwise look at the elements while toasting. dark areas mean lower wattage is being dissipated and the element may be bad near a dark spot.

Duraband 4 slice toaster manual model # TS-5221

if u need a manual for a toaster, then u r really in trouble...espcially for the amt of money u paid for it.
ok...
if u need instructions on how to use a toaster...here goes:
When:
A toaster is used to heat slices of bread, bagels, waffles, etc. to a hot, crispy consistency. Most toasters allow the user to set the toasting length to ensure the toasted bread comes out to temperature and crispiness to the user’s likes.
Where:
Toasters should be used on a flat, uncluttered surface near an electrical outlet but far from sinks, or running/standing water.
How:
To toast bread in a toaster, follow these instructions:

1. Place slices of toast, one each, in the slots on the top of the toaster.

2. Find the toast setting (a knob or lever) and adjust to the desired wellness of the toast. (Generally, there is a scale printed near the knob or lever ranging from light to dark toast).

3. Push down the toasting lever (moving the slices of bread down into the toaster between the heating elements.

4. When the toast is finished, the slices will “pop” up automatically.

5. Remove the toast from the toaster.
WARNING:
If the bread should get stuck inside the toaster, DO NOT PUT ANYTHING INSIDE THE TOASTER in attempt to dig it out. UNPLUG the toaster, turn it upside down and shake. If the toast does not fall out, use a plastic fork or knife to gently remove it from the toaster. Using metal utensils could damage the heating elements. NEVER stick anything in the toaster while it is plugged in.
*For further safety, it is recommended that the toaster be unplugged after each use.
I wish u luck and happy toasting.
