Freezer works fine, but refrigerator above isn't cool enough?

Sounds like a defrost problem. Most likely the defrost heater or defrost thermostat. I can show you how to force defrost and send the manual that covers how to on those models. I will send in a few moments, Sea Breeze

Back wall of freezer has lots of ice, evap fan not turning and the upper part of the whole fridge is warm..

The defrost system needs your attention. What I would do first is force defrost, check for amp draw of heater, and replace heater and terminator(defrost thermistat).

How do i advance the defrost timer

You don't have a defrost timer, you have a mother board probably on the back of the unit. It determines when to defrost based on the usuage of the unit.
you can force defrost with a jumper from J11 to J9, then monitor current. Assuming fridge is freezing , this should supply current to defrost coils. If not working, you have a bad heater or defrost thermostat. If this works, you have a bad mother boar

How do you test the defrost heater to see if it is functioning? We had same issue several years ago and the defrost heater was the issue. Before we buy parts, is there a way to test to see if that is truly...

You can remove the wires from the heater and using a volt/ohm meter set for ohms, test the heater terminals. If it reads it is good. If it does not read it is bad.
Or,you can force the fridge into the defrost mode and wait for the heater to come on. Find the defrost timer and turn it to the defrost setting.
This being a GE refrigerator it is probably the heater and the defrost thermostat.

Ge mod.pde18lzpbww.defrost tray ice buildup every

Remove the rear panel inside the freezer . Defrost the drain tray whr=ere the drain hole is until water will flow down it . Hot water sometimes helps . Use a small hose inserted into the drain and blow out any debris . Get a Solid ALUMINUM wire about 9 inches long (14-16 guage) and put into the hole as far as possible without using force (bend the wire if necessary) and make a hook with the other end ahich you should hook onto the defrost heater . This ALUMINUM wire will keep the drain hole cleared of ice due to the transfer of heat from the glass defrost heater . Do not make the hook too tight for fear of breaking the glass covering on the heater .

How do I force a defrost on a ge sxs gss20iepcww It is not a touch pad control ref. It has 2 knobs

on all ge electronic models produced since 2000 the main power lead to the main board can be jumped to test either defrost or compressor do this unplug the unit and locate the 3 wire plug (usually blue in color) .unplug the harness from the board and create a jumper wire to by pass the board.the terminals on the board will be identified as line, compressor and put unit in defrost install jumper between line and htr or def .this will ck the defrost sys.once unit is plugged in with jumper in place the heater will come on.if the heater does not come on look for a defective heater or defrost t/stat.hope this helps.

GE refrigerator not defrosting

To force this unit into a defrost mode, unplug the fridge and remove the cover from the main control broad and remove the main wire harness. (Three wires, Black, Blue and Brown I believe) Next take a a small 3in wire and bend it into a U shape to make a jumper.

Insert the jumper into the main wire harness to jump the to outer wires together. (Black to Brown) It should be pretty easy to slip it in through the back with the rest of the wires. (Don't worry this test will not cause any harm to your fridge)
Now reapply the power to the fridge and check the defrost heater. As long as the defrost thermostat is below 15 degrees then the heater should start working. If the heater doesn't work then there is a problem with either the defrost thermostat or the heater. GE uses a glass tube heater with a coiled wire inside. This wire has a habit of breaking after a few years.

As far as the thermistors go, all the do is tell the board to cool. They can make the unit cool all the time but the board should still defrost the evaporator every 6-36 hours. If the unit starts defrosting then you have a bad board.

Hope this helps and let me know if you need any clarification. Good Luck!
