Question about Garden
First off what model of trimmer is it? an fs what? second, if you are talking about the recoil spring you will need to go to a STIHL dealer and order a new one. If it came off one end then that means it broke and needs to be replaced and if it isn't broken but now uncoiled replacing it will be easier then trying to rewind it and put it back together

I just had this same issue. I found out that you have to take the cord out of the handle then put the spool in. You then rotate the spool back in and align the spool with the spring and fish out the cord which will put a small amout of tension on it. You keep the tension on it and put the handle back on.

remove the cover and the screw holding the recoil down, turning the pulley ccw should release the spring then wind rope around pulley and (hopefully yours has the slot in it) wind in the direction of the pulley teeth then, holding rope in slot put back on spring and wind cw till almost tight, and install screw. Usually you can do this without taking rope handle off. sometimes you have to remove handle. look at spring end in the middle and make sure its not broke as long as you have it apart. Its a easy fix.
Thanks for using fixya

This is a parts site for you with a schematic so you can see what is going on. I think your return spring is either broken or out of it's keeper. Check it out. hope this helps.
