The planetary housing of my Kitchen Artisan mixer moves up and down. I can move in with my hand and it moves up and down occasionally when mixing. This just started.

Properly having a look to find the cause is going to involve removing the planetary (remove chrome drip ring and knock out the pin) and then removing the back cover. Remove the white and the black wires from the speed control and take the return spring off the bottom of it. Undo the 9 screws holding the gear cases together and separate the 2 halves. You will now be able to inspect the shaft, spacing washer pins and gears on the planetary driving shaft. Normally they have a bit if movement up and down in the planetary (when it is fully assembled) I've never found a fault within the gearbox to cause it or if I have it's been through someone pulling it apart and not assembling it correctly. When I do them I add an extra fibre washer on the outside between the planetary and gearbox housing, there should already be one there, I add another of suitable thickness to remove play but not make it tight.

How to replace kitchenaid stand mixer gears

If you go here and download the parts it may assist you with the dismantling and should show you what parts are separate and what parts are only available as an assembly. Some of the gearboxes are complete units only.

Loud squeek when beginning mixing with KitchenAid bowl-lift stand mixer does it need oiling?

Sounds like it needs disassembly and oiling the rear bearing and cleaning out the front gearbox and refilling with grease. Mendingshed.com has the service manuals for download.

Mixer noisey and not going round freely

Your mixer most likely has a stripped gears, or a combination of stripped gears. The 5kpm5ewh is an international model similar to the ksm5. The gearing inside the mixer will be the same, some of the electrical parts may differ.
Your mixer has a nylon worm gear inside, this is the most common gear to strip inside the mixer. I would recommend opening the mixer and inspecting all of the gears before you place an order.

Most likely you will need the worm gear, which is available by itself (http://www.mendingshed.com/kawormgear.html) or you can get it in the whole worm drive pinion gear assembly (http://www.mendingshed.com/kitchenaidgearassy.html) the whole assembly is a lot easier to replace, and will save you a lot of time. You may also need to replace the grease inside your mixer, KitchenAid recommends the Benalene 930-2 food grade grease, it is only available in a 30oz can (http://www.mendingshed.com/kagrease.html) And you will also need to replace the gearbox gasket (http://www.mendingshed.com/mixergasket.html).
To aid you in your repair, here is a link to the KitchenAid service manual (http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mendingshed/kitchenaidservicemanual.pdf) This will walk you through how to take apart the mixer, replace the gear, grease and gasket, and reassemble the mixer.

Oil leaks out when tip up .around

KitchenAid uses a vegetable based grease inside of their mixers, it is a food safe grease. Because of this if you do not use your mixer often and over time the grease inside the mixer can begin to break down, and an oil will leak from the mixer.

What you will need to do is take the mixer apart, clean out the old grease and replace it with new KitchenAid grease, it is also recommended that you replace the gearbox gasket.

We are one of KitchenAid's largest service centers in the US, everything we sell is Genuine KitchenAid replacement parts.

Here is a link to the grease on our website: http://www.mendingshed.com/kagrease.html
And a link to the gearbox gasket: http://www.mendingshed.com/mixergasket.html

Also to aid you in the repair here is a link to the KitchenAid service manual for your mixer. this will show you how to take the mixer apart, replace the grease, and reassemble the mixer. http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/mendingshed/kitchenaid6qtservicemanual.pdf

OIL IS LEAKING OUT OF THE HEAD INTO FOOD BOWL. KITCHENAID SAID OK, FOOD GRADE OIL! I DON'T LIKE BLACK OILY CAKE OR COOKIES? CAN YOU HELP US TO FIX OURSELVES.

Kitchenaid says to run the machine on 'high' long enough to heat the gearbox well and then turn the machine upside down and let it cool.

What happens is when you don't use your mixer a lot the grease in the gearbox will separate into oil and thicker grease. Warming it and turning it upside down is supposed to mix all the grease together again and allow it to flow to the top of the gearbox.

Give it a try, check back if you get no satisfaction and we'll get you started on changing your grease.

What kind of grease can be used on a stand mixer after replacing a stripped worm gear? model:K45SS

Food grade grease is what Kitchen Aid put into the gearbox originally. They do supply it as a spare part if you cannot find it as a non Kitchen Aid part.

KitchenAid Artisan 10 speed 325Watt Mixer

Hi, The KitchenAid mixers are usually quite easy to work on if you are competent at DIY. It sounds like a gearbox fault. Gearbox parts are easy obtained for most of the models and are easy to repair.

This is a service manual for a lot of the KitchenAid mixers. Might give you an idea on how difficult it is to work on before taking the plunge.

Hope this helps
