Question about Nikon Smz-2t Binocular Stereo Zoom Microscope

Open Question

I'm looking for recommendations about matching a digital camera with a Nikon SMZ-2T Microscope

We use the microscope for inspection of surfaces on transparent optical surfaces and we would like to document any contamination in the 5-30 micron range.

The Nikon Optiphot 2 tube length is 160 mm DIN finite. It is a 1990 vintage microscope. Any objective lens with the standard RMS thread, -160 engraved on it will work. It will not work with other brnads with the infinity symbol engraved on it or infinity tube length Nikon 200 mm, CFI60 objectives for 2000 vintage to present microscopes. - Lawsen Lew

There are 4 major brands (Zeiss, Nikon, Leica, and Olympus) that sell to universities etc but these are more expensive than some other manufacturers that are less well known but with high quality standards (Motic, Meiji). A well designed site with pricing information is microscopeworld.com. The owners are knowledgeable and helpful. Always look at the scope with your samples or request an evaluation period on the PO.

Problem with Leica microscope

if you check the operation for spliting to a photo tube. PG 49 you can see the procedure for using a camera (there is a control pin on the side of the scope (shown on pg 49) which you have to operate to switch to the camera output... you should then be able to take your photos :) http://www.vashaw.com/assets/84/84original.pdf

Image rings when using Coolpix for microscopy

Under some circumstances when using the Coolpix 4500 attached to a microscope concentric rings are visible as in the below. The COOLPIX 4500 aspherical lens surface is ground to create the ideal curves to gather rays at the focal point with an extremely high accuracy. Such minute lines are not visible in the image taken with a camera alone, however if the camera is used with a microscope, the lines become visible as the depth of field is increased due to the combined F numbers of the camera lens and microscope lenses.
