Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

Help! chaimberlain/sears 1/2 hp door opener prob.

Sounds like you're the guy to ask. I replaced the worm and drive gears, along with the parts that came with them. When I try to run it (with or without the chain on), it goes a few inches, then reverses. The RPM sensors are not touching anything. wires all plugged back in. Force adjustment at max, both up and down. Parts lubricated. Light on back flashes 5 times. Can you figure this one out? THANKS!!! Ken

but this happens with the chain totally off and the sensors touching nothing as it begins to travel. Still same solution?

Fist, turn down the force settings to half. The force settings can damage the door when turned up that high.. Your problem is with the limit settings. This is the three white screws on the bottom with the cover off. You will have to take the bottom off the gear and sprocket assembly and place the limit in the position that the trolley is and adjust the other two screws accordingly.

After the opener reverses, does the lightbulb on the opener flash?

  • Vince Heuser Jan 27, 2009

You have an issue with the safety eyes also. Make sure the lights are on on the eyes and if not align eyes so that they are pointed directly at each other.

That is what the lights mean. This is one I would have to check out. I suggest you call a tech or just buy a new opener. If you are willing to install yourself you are better off buying your own.

Is there any adjustment for the gear drive sprocket that meshes with the worm drive? my gear is not engaging any more

If your drive gear is not meshing with the worm gear it is because it is worn out. You'll need to replace it post haste. The part number is 41A2817 and is available at Sears or any good door opener service company.

Had 1/2 hp sears/craftman chain drive garage opener for a number of years but recently garage door did not open all the way. Discovered worm gear and main gear worn out so replaced them with kit from...

Make sure you put the black cup back on the end of the motor shaft and that it is pressed all the way on. Make sure the RPM sensor is plugged in. If neither of these are the issue, then you probably did not have the motor shaft pushed all the way back when you tightened the coupler after replacing the worm gear. Loosen that coupler up and from the front of the motor (opposite end in which the coupler is on) push the shaft back as far as it will go. Hold it there while you tighten the coupler back up and then try it.

Garage door motor dead

Keep checking for loose wires. Nothing about changing the gear should cause the motor to stop running. Check the wires on the start capacitor and follow the white wire from the motor and make sure it is connected.

Garage door opener motor will not open garage door

It sounds like you did a really good job! My Craftsman 1/2 hp gar. dr. opener has a red reset button on it on the l/h side as you are looking at the light/motor from the garage door opening. You have to take the light cover off to be able to see it. My reset button is on the same side as the ground wire. You might check the ground wire while you're there. I really hope that this fixes it for you (and me). I'm quite sure it will as you know your way around the garage door opener already. Good Luck and Let me Know (Please) if it fixed it or not. If I think of anything else, I'll let you know. Have a Good Day!
