Do you have a surround mode turned on? Most vocals will come through the center channel. If you have a surround mode selected, and no center channel speaker hooked up you will lose vocals.

Do you have a schematic for Pioneer VSX-37TX?

I don't have a schematic for this model but you can listen when the problem starts and you can isolate it by using a can of freeze spray into the amplifier section when the noise disappears try heating the ares until the noise starts again until you zero in on the defective component .replace the defective component and you are all set.

Background music is loud but voices are barely audible when watching a DVD through the receiver. The cable through the receiver works normal. Please help!!!

The natual dolby digital is meant to be listened to loud.
There is a setup feature on the receiver called ATT (for attenuation). Set this to medium or high. This is a general answer - not specific to your model. You may have to do it through a setup menu or some receivers have an ATT button on the remote.

Yes, the music should pause, the directions should be given and then the music should pick right up from where it was paused.

The symptoms you describe are caused by a break in the earphone socket ground connection.

If you are confident enough, dismantle the player and re-solder the 4 connections to the earphone socket.
