Since that is a centrifugal clutch, the speed of the engine is what turns the sprocket. If it revs good and doesn't turn then I would have to assume that the clutch is not making contact with the drum, the chain brake is on, or it really isn't revving the way you might think it should. If it is a clutch issue then it should over rev.

SOURCE: Chain Saw, Stihl Model 011, cutting off

I've been messin with my poulan 2150 that was doing the same thing. Good, fresh gas, good spark, etc. I noticed whenever I loosened the fuel cap it would literally spray gas out! alas, I removed the muiffler assy and the darn thing fired up the first pull! I've got the muffler parts soaking in gas right now and I'm sure this the problem. It just makes sense especially if you use the same 'mixed fuel' can for weed eater, blower, etc. Check your's out, it could very well be your problem too! GOOD LUCK

SOURCE: i took the sprocket cover off to remove the bar

It must be reset before you can reinstall it.
This answer stolen from Dolfoff;

Clamp the cover in a vise being careful to stay on flat surfaces of the cover (use wooden blocks if needed) and pull the brake lever back to the "OFF" position. It's a strong spring so pull hard in the direction that would be towards the rear of the saw if the cover were installed.
Hope this helps.

  1. Check the IPL for your saw to see if any special tools are needed.
  2. There are metal piston stops available, when square (almost never) with the piston top these work well, if not square they have been known to punch through the piston. I suggest a length of starter cord or nylon rope be used instead of the piston stop (retain 6" ± so you can remove it). Make sure the piston is near the top of the cylinder before feeding the cord or it can fall through the exhaust port and damage the piston as it rises.
  3. It is probably a left handed thread (tighten it to loosen it).
Let us know how it worked for you. GL

SOURCE: Motor turns --sprocket or chain doesn't

No clutch on this model electric. I suspect a stripped gear.

  • Click the “YourModelNumber” - Remington Electric Chain Saw "View Model" link.
  • Click “View Owners Manual” or "View Illustrated Parts Diagram" link.

Remington is no longer in production. Often eBay is the only source for ereplacement parts. I suspect this saw was subjected to some severe operation. The motor for any model Remington cannot be found. Look hard at the cost of a new sprocket kit if available, you might be better served with a different saw. We rarely get questions about McCulloch or Poulan electrics, I suspect a much higher quality saw that will nedd few if any replacement parts. Wen is back in production, they used to be a quality product they might be worthy a critical inspection.

If you have more questions or need additional help please reply below and I will get back to you. Good Luck. HTH

Chain does not move on the ms170 stihl chainsaw

I assume you have the correct chain for the bar and that the sprocket on the end of the chain bar goes around. Check the bar for any defects like pinches where the bar has been caught. Check the chain drive cogs for any burs on the edges - often happens if the chain has been run too slack and then come off!

Check the chain drive teeth thickness which should be the same as the chain bar can accept. Check also you have the right pitch chain for the drive teeth on the clutch sprocket. Assuming the chain brake is not on then you should be able to move the chain around the bar when all the slack has been taken out. If the chain and bar checks are all ok then there is a problem with the clutch. With the chain brake off the clutch with the chain drive sprocket on should spin reasonably freely. If not then you need to remove the 'E' shaped circlip in the centre of the clutch drum , remove the washer behind it and slide off the clutch drum. Then remove the roller bearing and be prepared to replace it if it will not run freely. Clean out all the muck in the clutch housing and check for anything obviously broken. If all appears ok then put a few drops of 2 stroke oil on the roller bearing and replace it on the shaft. Clean the clutch drum and replace it on the shaft. Then the washer and 'E' clip and re-fit the bar and chain. Re-fit the cover and tension the chain and try again. If that does not do it then there has to be a problem with the chain bar.

Motor runs but blade stops 1" into the wood

Seems like it could be a clutch/drum issue. I have known clutches to break through the threads in the crank shaft so they appear tight but are actually broken. I'd look at the drum assembly to see why the drive to the chain is slipping.

The engine will run but chain does not move. what could be the broblem

Hi,
Right inside of where the bolts are that hold the bar on and the chain tensioner is... there is a centrifugal clutch that engages the chain when the engine revs up...that clutch has gone bad and is not transferring the power from the saw to the chain...
Of that is assuming that the chain is on the sprocket and not sitting off to the side of the sprocket...

remove chain and bar and start up saw if gear turns and revs up than oil bar and chain// if not safety/kickback may be holding back adjust, reset or clean if sticking-- clutch sticking repair or replace

Stihl ms290 chain runs constantly even when idling and when u put the chain brake on it kills the saw

The centrifical clutch is probably rusted (or has a broken spring). You can try a small amount of WD-40 inside the clutch to see it that will break it loose.
Also, be sure that the chain tension adjustment is not too tight!!
