You can play nearly all video formats with VLC media player. That is free.

Depends on the video file format. Or, how you have selected the formats in the Media player setups, open settings in media players or Windows default settings.

Cannot play DVD, cd video wont play to media player

not sure whether its a problem with the drive or a problem with windows media player. Take a can of air and blow some onto the laser of the dvd drive, this will make sure that there is no dirt or dust on the laser.

Once you do that put the dvd back into the drive. Give it about 20-30 seconds and then see if it tries to pull up the movie if it does and your getting errors from windows media player then we know that the drive is working cause its seeing the movie properly.

At that point, I would suggest downloading the latest version of windows media player.

Go here to download the latest version of Windows Media Player 11.

After doing that and installing it, try playing your movie again, in fact try several movies just to make sure. Windows Media player may want to download Codecs, if it does then let it. This will allow it to recognize dvds better and quicker.

If the codecs are updated and you still can't get it to see and play movies then I would suggest using a different dvd player such as Cyberlink PowerDVD located on this page:

How come I can't play a video with AVCHD format on my laptop? My laptop is an HP Pavillion DV7

Each of the AVCHD camcorders ships with software designed to playback the files on your computer. Sony's HDR-SR1 and the newer HDR-SR5 both record video in the AVCHD format and ship with the Picture Motion Browser, which plays back AVCHD files on most computers. If you purchased one of the Panasonic AVCHD camcorders, the included HD Writer should allow you to playback video recorded with your camcorder.

While the bundled applications work, my personal preference, is Cyberlink PowerDVD Ultra, which supports playback of the AVCHD files and a whole host of other high definition formats. In addition to playing back your HD camcorder files, PowerDVD Ultra plays back Blu-ray and HD-DVD disks (with the accompanying drives connected, of course). PowerDVD Ultra also makes it possible to expand your HD video editing options, by using the included codecs to render the AVCHD video in apps like VirtualDub.

Cyberlink PowerDVD ultra can be downloaded from here :

That's quick time for you. Do you have the latest version installed?
Have you tried VLC Media Player for Windows Media 11?
Very good programs. You can download codec packages that will play any movie format, change formats, play directly from websites, dvd's, cd's and everything else.

No picture, only sound

Actually this is a problem of the video codec and you need o install some software that will solve your problem completely.

Download :
1) VLC Media Player :

Play dvd nothing - play s/d card (video) sound but no picture.

You need to update the dvd softwear. Check the default settings for playback of media,if it is set to windows media it won't work if you hav'nt installed the correct updates. Choose the Toshiba dvd player as the default player and it should work. If you prefer windows media then you can get the updated codecs from ' free-codecs.com ' Easier still, try uninstalling your windows media player and installing windows media 11, this will usually resolve the problem.

Cannot play dvds as drivers lost when changing from vista to xp home.when enter dvd it says dvd decoder and drives lost

If you are running XP, you will need to install a DVD playback application. IN VIsta, DVD playback is native to WIndows, in XP, Dell used a program called Cyberlink PowerDVD. You can either buy PowerDVD on line or download a free DVD playback application from places like Download.com. I've had good luck with the AVS DVD player here:

http://www.download.com/AVS-DVD-Player/3000-7970_4-10491860.html?cdlPid=10669161

If you just installed XP on this system, it is also important that all the drivers are installed and in the correct order. Dell's preferred order is:

Notebook System Software
Chipset Utility
Video Driver
Sound Driver
Modem Driver
Network Driver
Wireless Driver
Touchpad Driver
Quickset Utility

Drivers are available here:
