Question about KitchenAid KIRD801HSS Kitchen Hood

Open Question

I have a 4 year old Kitchenaid downdraft KIRD801HSS stops when attemting to retract

The unit has worked fine for all these years. It has been kept up very well. Recently when trying to raise the telescope, it sticks and I have to push the button numerous times to get it to rise all the way. It also retracts very slowly when attempting to close. I have sprayed silicone spray on the rails and WD-40 to attempt to lubricate it.Their may be built-up grease down inside the tracks. How does one remove and/or clean the rails without removing the unit? I'm afraid this dragging motion will burn out the motor. Help!!

Had to remove the screws on the BOTTOM of the outside door, then panel came off after all the screws (inside oven door included) were off...
Reversed the order to put back on.. Cleaned (all) three glass pieces nicely... Now after reading the problems with the self cleaning part (doors getting stuck!) - I'm afraid to try mine!

Kitchen Aid downdraft hood stuck in retracted position

The filters need to be seated properly to complete an electrical safety circuit. This keeps the unit from operating without the filters. The best way I have found to fix them when they get dislodged in the closed position is by using two spatulas. The first is used to move the filter forward a bit and the second is used to keep it pushed tightly forward to complete the circuit.

Downdraft vent won't stay down. Push the button and it retracts normally, then pops right back up?

check your bottom limit switch - i'm guessing its bad. the unit doesn't stop operating til it trips a (working) limit switch, if the switch is bad it'll cyle right past it and go back up until it hits the top limit switch (again).
