Why does it smell?

CAUSES MAY BE:poor quality detergents, not using the recommended quantities, or only using colour-friendly detergents or liquid detergent which contain no bleach allowing bacteria to thrive can seriously rot a washing machine inside.

SOLUTION:you can fix that by putting half a cup of white (distilled) vinegar inside an empty machine and put it on a boil wash. Note that because the first bit of water goes into the sump hose and is sealed off, I recommend that you wait until the washing machine has been filling for about 15 seconds before pouring the vinegar into the soap drawer where water is running in to let it wash down into the machine. I've had reports back from people that this does actually work

HE Front loaders only - Prevent clogging and stop towels from stinking. Green...

First and foremost, stop using all liquid detergents. Switch to a powdered HE detergent. The liquid HE detergents build up in the washers drain and sit there and will catch everything. The buildup is due to a lack of rinsing power to effectively move the mass and will become really funky as a result. This buildup will burp and backwash into your washer causing your towels to stink horribly at first and then other clothing. If you're experiencing this and you can smell the funk in your washer when you open it, you can fix this efficiently and on the cheap. Buy citric acid, which comes from fruits and is completely safe for the environment. You can purchase small amounts at your grocery store or check Amazon for bulk, also see the link below. Just use 2 tablespoons and set your machine to the hottest setting and longest cycle. Do this once a week until you don't smell anything in the washer and your laundry. Be sure you switch to the powdered HE detergent as the powered detergents break down more effectively and do not clog your washers drain.

What lime scale / detergent remover can be used for regular cleaning of my front loader.

Front-loading washing machines are energy efficient and use less detergent than top-loaders, but they sometimes have a tendency to harbor mold and unpleasant smells. By giving your washing machine a quick clean once a month, you'll keep your front-loader fresh, which means cleaner clothes, too. This eco-friendly method doesn't use bleach, costs only pennies to make, and comes together with ingredients you already have on hand.
What You'll Need:
  • 2 cups vinegar
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 1/4 cup water
  • Scrub sponge
  1. Start by mixing together the baking soda and water in a small bowl. This is going to be the "detergent" for cleaning the washing machine. Pour the vinegar into a measuring cup and head over to your washing machine.
  2. Add the baking soda mixture to the detergent container of your machine and pour the vinegar into the drum. Set your washer to normal load at the hottest water setting. Close the door and start the machine, letting it do all the hard work for you. The baking soda and vinegar naturally break up mineral deposits and any mold growth while cleaning and refreshing your washing machine.
  3. Use a clean scrubber to rub around the opening of the washing machine, removing stubborn mold or residue. Wipe clean with fresh water.
  4. Your washing machine is sparkling clean and ready to do a load of laundry! Give your front-loader a cleaning once a month to keep your clothes smelling fresh and your machine working in tip-top condition.

Where can I get an eco-friendly bean bag chair?

The ecosak website has some really nice organic cotton bean bags or you could try the Kilpatrick design website that fills their bean bags with more eco-friendly reclaimed shredded foam.

Why do the clothes not smell nice

You might try running an empty load with hot water and bleach to clean out the washer. If it's a front load washer, high efficient detergent is recommended. Using the wrong type of detergent (or too much) can cause the undissolved detergent to sour over time and smell. Look for any hidden garment around the boot or in the duct that allows water into the tub, at the boot. Make sure the drain hose is not air tight at the drain pipe. Sometimes a siphon break may be needed at the stand pipe where the drain hose connects.

1994 Kenmore 90 series washer smells musty

If you do not use a hot water cycle every so often it can contribute to the build up of mold or mildew inside the washer drain lines, pump and tub.. This is a common problem for those that only use cold water cycles. The detergent alone sometimes is not enough to kill bacteria. You also need the heat from hot water. I would recommend that you run a cleaning cycle on the hottest setting you have about once per week as a preventive measure. Add some bleach to the water to kill any existing bacteria. NOTE: This may take a couple of wash loads before you notice a difference. If you wish to conserve by not wasting water and energy by running an empty wash tub every week, switch to washing your whites in hot water with a little bleach to keep them brighter. This will kill bacteria in the washer in the process. I hope this helps you.
