Rather doing a driver hunt which can take hours http://download.cnet.com/slimdrivers-free/3000-18513_4-75279940.html Windows XP/Vista/7/8
it might take some time being a freeware driver solution Note: it will find all of your outdated drivers
This will automatically search for and find the correct driver you will have to update every driver individually once you update you might be asked whether you want to restart or make a system restore point.
Click no to both of these then continue updating each driver free then restart once all of the drivers have been updated.
Hope this helps.

A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
The service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

SOURCE: Problem regarding sound
unfortunately, other solution, as good hearted as it is, won't solve the problem as laptops dont have a sound card it is onboard, so check that your notebook doesnt need the realtek high definition sound driver, apologies if you already installed it. Go to My computer>right click>properties>hardware tab>device manager and look down the list at sound video and game controllers, click '+' sign and check that the realtek is listed there, if there is an exclamation mark against sound the drivers are not installed correctly. Run this diagnostic test, click Start>run, then type 'dxdiag' and press enter, go to sound tab and let windows do a driver check. If all drivers are in place as other solution said check it is not muted, there should be a speaker icon in taskbar, right click, volume properties and make sure it is not ticked 'mute'. If all that is ok then the onboard sound may be damaged. Check in the bios in boot up press F2 or Del dependant on bios and go through all the menus and check for onboard sound and that it is enabled, if so then the motherboard sound is faulty, and only a new board can solve it unfortunately.

SOURCE: Gateway 450rog Audio problem
I have just re-imaged a Gateway 450 ROG for a friend of mine on the website the audio driver is found (http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn¶m=3501353) under the heading Sound Downloads. This unzips a list of files C:\cabs\9520522
stac97(control panel extension)
stac97 (setup information)
1. From the Start menu, click Control Panel.
2. In Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance.
3. In Performance and Maintenance, click the System icon.
4. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Hardware tab, and then click Device Manager.
5. In Device Manager, click the plus sign (+) next to Other Devices, and then double-click Multimedia Audio Controller.
6. In the Multimedia Audio Controller Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
7. In the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box, click Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), and then click Next.
8. In the next dialog box, click Search for the best driver in these locations, and then click Include this location in the search.
9. In the text box, type: C:\CABS\9520522. Click Next.
10. Click Finish.
Now once installed sound only comes from using the headphone jack, the external speakers get a little sound if the volume is turned up to maximum.
Hope this helps
