Ice maker does not make ice. water pools in the mechanism-not the bin. Refrig works fine.

  • barryeco Jan 29, 2009

The refrigerator works fine other thatn the ice maker does not make ice. It does not appear to have power to it and water pools in the mechanism. (not the bin) Is it clogged up?? What other advice can you offer? It is slightly more than 3 years old and was working fine to this point.

    Thank you

There's no ice If your ice maker has stopped producing ice completely, check these, in this order:

  • It may be turned off. Look for the wire along the right side of the ice maker that looks a bit like a coat hanger. If the wire is in the raised position, the ice maker is turned off. If so, try one of these:

    • If your ice maker has a small red plastic lever, lower it to lower the wire.

    • If there's no plastic lever, simply lower the wire.

In either case, the ice maker should begin producing ice again. Also make sure that the temperature is 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won't cycle properly.

  • The ice maker fill tube may be blocked with ice. If so, melt the blockage using a hair dryer-but be careful to not melt any plastic parts! Also replace the water shut-off valve or water-inlet valve, or both, if necessary.

  • The ice maker head assembly may have broken parts. Look to see if the gears are broken. Check to see if the small plastic arms that rest against the ice rake are broken. If the ice maker head assembly is modular and you've found broken parts, you can just replace it.

Small or too few ice cubes If the ice maker is producing ice poorly--making small cubes or too few cubes--you probably have a clogged water line, a defective water-inlet valve, or a defective ice maker mold thermostat that isn't cycling properly. Check these:

  • The water line that's attached to the back of the refrigerator. Make sure you have good water flow. If the flow is poor, repair, clean, or replace the tubing or the shut-off valve that supplies the water.

  • The water-inlet valve. Replace it if it has failed.

  • Check the freezer temperature. If should be 8 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. If the freezer is too warm, the ice maker won't cycle properly.

  • The ice maker mold thermostat. Make sure that it's cycling properly.

Specks in the cubes If you find black or gray specks in your ice cubes, have a look at the ice cube tray. If the protective coating is peeling away, the most economical solution is to completely replace the ice maker.

Check if there is a leak on the water lines. Check if water lines are freezing.

If no water is coming to the icemaker, you need to replace the icemaker assembly, or the pump.

If there is no power at all to the icemaker, then check the wiring harness, and the solenoid that actuates the ice maker, the problem is usually either the wirings, or the solenoid.

Hi

Kindly check it could be because of following reasons :

  • Freezer may not be cold enough.
Temperature must be 5 degrees (Fahrenheit) or colder to work properly.
  • Normal ice making capacity.
The ice maker will produce between 2.5 to 4.0 pounds of ice a day depending on your model. Side-by-side models come with a large ice bucket and it may take up to three days to fill this container.
  • Water supply valve may not be completely open.
    Open valve completely.
  • Water supply valve may be blocked by foreign material or may not be large enough.
Supply valve must have a 1/4" opening for water to fully supply ice maker. Many self-piercing valves do not have this big of an opening. Replace water supply valve with one that has a 1/4" opening.
  • Water filter may need changing.
If equipped with a water filter, replace filter canister or cartridge.
Please feel free to contact for further assistance

    Thanks
    Rylee

My ice maker inst working Whirlpoo; model gz25fsrxyy2

By "ice maker isn't working" do you mean it isn't filling with water, it isn't freezing the water in the ice maker, it isn't dumping the ice cubes into the bin, or it isn't dispensing ice cubes?
Was it previously working and it is not working now?

Typically one can hear the valve when it opens to fill the ice maker with water. Can you hear it attempting to do so? If so, and there isn't any water in the ice tray, check that there is water supplied to the valve at the wall and the valve is open. Is there a water filter? Has it been replaced per the manufacturer's recommendation? (Typically, the water filter should be replaced every six months.)

Is the "full" bar pushed up? It shouldn't be. The bar above the ice cubes should not be in the horizontal position. That position tells the ice maker the bin is full so it should wait until the bar goes down, indicating some ice has been used.

Can you hear the bayonet turning? Is the ice maker attempting to dump out cubes whether or not they exist? The next issue after you confirm there is water going into the ice maker that is being frozen and the ice maker knows to dump the ice, is the bayonet. There is a motor that turns the bayonet and a mechanical connection. Either could be at fault.

Have replaced the 3part inlet water valve for our fridge freezer. Water is working fine, but still not making ice.

Check the ice bin level arm (also the ice maker on/off switch) is in the down position. It senses when the ice bin is full and turns off the ice maker until some ice in the bin gets used. It can also be lifted into the up position to turn the ice maker off.

I have a Whirlpool refrig./freezer. I have no problem with the ice dropping in the bucket, but when I try to dispense it under the chute,it wil not dispense. The water works fine. This is a side side ...

Sometimes the ice will collect, melt, and freeze into a giant headache. If you have the one where you can get ice out of the holding bin inside the freezer, see if the ice bin will come apart from the rest of the dispenser. If it doesn't come easily, get as much ice out of the bin, get a wet vac ready and pour warm water on the ice. It will run through the dispenser. Once things come apart easily, you can take it over to sink and get rid of the ice blockage with warm water, let it dry, reinstall, and check to see if it works. Hope this helps.

I have a Maytag MFI2568AEW refrig. and the ice maker is not filling up. I checked the dual water valve and it is not getting power to open the solenoid valve with the ice maker switch on and the ice bin...

On typical ice makers that signal comes from within the ice maker. It sends a signal from the ice makers thermostat and the ice maker begins to pre-heat the ice cube slots and the ice rake begins turning to push the ice out of the slot's and into the ice bin. The last function is to refill the water with a signal to the dual water control valve that last about 7.5 seconds. Once the ice maker senses the water is frozen again it begins this cycle again. Here is a refrigerator parts PDF for your model=> MFI2568AEW and on page 10 you will see part=> 627985 Pin Style Icemaker Thermostat

Icemaker makes shells. Outside is frozen but

Hollow cubes are caused by not having enough water in the ice mold. Fill it up manually by pouring water in it and see how the cubes turn out.
look for an adjustment behind the plastic endcover with a +/- on it. - is less water. + is more water.

Try swapping the wires on the dual water inlet valve. Then try the water dispenser. The water should go to the ice maker. This will tell you weather or not the ice maker valve is working and if the line is clear.

There is a screen filter before the water inlet valve in the water line. It can get partially stopped up with sediment blocking water flow.

Ice Maker No Longer Works - Water Works fine

Not sure if this will work for you - I had a similar problem with a Kenmore fridge. I removed the ice tray and found a piece of ice stuck where the ice is made and dropped into the tray. Once I clear this obstruction, the ice maker worked again. Also, check for the mechanism that indicates that the ice tray is full. This may be jammed or malfunctionin.
