Hoover 5470-900 no longer contacts carpet with beater brush
My Hoover WindTunnel vacuum no longer contacts the carpet with the beater brush and has very little suction for the carpet.
It works fine when I use it with the accessories.
I have replaced the beater bar and have taken apart the front plate pieces to make sure that there is nothing blocking airflow. While I have the front plate stuff removed, I checked for vacuum power at the point that the hose comes down and it is still very powerful.
No matter how low I set the height setting, the beater bar does not come in contact with the carpet.
It feels like I am dragging the unit across the floor without wheels, but nothing appears broken or unusual.
thanks for any help

Your floor adjustment spring is broken there is a plastic slider and clip if it is broken the height adj will not work you should get a new vacuum because this repair can cost as much as a new vac.also this is a common problem with the hoover brand I would get a sebo or an oreck they have a great warrentty and you will more than likly never buy a other vac.

Jim, To put tension on the brush, tilt machine forward when upright, move carpet selector knob to carpet. then turn vac on. Brush will only spin when vac is tilted back to operate. brush stops when upright and on to use hand tools so the er is no danger to carpet or persons with moving roller.
these dark marks are burn marks from the beater bar itself. most walmart, kmart, and target shelf vacuums from hoover, dyson, and any cheeper vacuum has a hard bristle system. I've noticed even on the high end hoovers as well that they do the same thing. the best way to save your carpets is to see if there is a replacement beater bar that can be substituted for your vacuum. i dont know what style of beater bar that particular one is but check with your local vacuum repair center to see if they have something with softer brushes you can use insted otherwise i would recommend a new vacuum with softer bristles. usually something that is half as stiff as what is already on yur unit. you culd also try lifting the hight setting as a temporary solution.
http://geeksquad.fixya.com/ThreadView.aspx?prdid=0&thid=783732 Generic problem for all Vacuums Beater brushes sometimes work and Posted by patarmao on Jul 14, 2008 Beater brushes sometimes work and very often not. Hoover WindTunnel bagless and beltless. Hello, I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Your problem is that you may need to change the belt every 4 to 6 months as a recommended belt change on the vacuum and also keep an eye on the brushes or brush strips, they also help in the vacuum working properly. Here is a typical belt change on a Hoover. Normally there are screws, clips or levers that would remove the bottom plate or if that does not work then the top cover will come off and that will expose the belt. Once that is off and the belt is exposed then cut off the old belt and then lift up the brushroll on the pulley end and install the new belt around the pulley end and re-install the brushroll. Then use a belt puller or a screwdriver with a bent right or left end to stretch the belt onto the motor pulley and then track the belt in a straight line and reverse you steps in the reinstall of the top cover or bottom plate. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions. http://www.hoover.com Telephone Contact our Customer Service Department at 1.330.499.9499 Monday through Friday 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. EST Thanks, Don the Vac Man Go Ahead. Sounds like the belt to the bar isnt turning properly or could be clogged up with dust or need replacing.
Either way youll need to open up the sole plate and check the condition of the belt by the rolling brush bar. Also check the condition of the brush bar to see if it isn't clogged up with general dirt and hair.
