Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

2 Answers

Lift master garage door opener. Motor makes noise when switch is hit likes its running but chain/sprocket doesn't move and the door is stuck open. Chain is on sprocket. Not sure if the motor is frozen? but when the switch is hit, it makes noise for going down, hit switch again and it makes noise like going up, hit again it goes off. But no door movement/no chain movement. Does it need a new motor/entire unit or is it something simpler? Any insight would be helpful. Monte

Same problem, pulled the cover off and the worm gear is stripped. Chamberlain website shows replacement gear is available. Hopefully not to hard to replace this gear.

When you say "Take The Unit Off The Ceiling To Replace The Gears" do you mean the entire Chain/arm assembly also?

Have you checked to see if the power out release that detaches the door from the chain was pulled? This would be the handle attached by a cord at the end of the drive next to the door. If it was released, reset the handle so the door and the drive are engaged.

I had the same problem. Took the cover off of the opener and found that the gears were stripped on the unit. Motor was fine. You can order gear replacement kit for the unit. They are a plastic type sprocket and worm gears. The kit comes with spindles and all necessary clips. You have to take the unit off the ceiling to replace the gears, but the process if very easy to do. Parts kit about $40 on line, much cheaper than a new door opener. Total process took less than 2 hours, including getting the unit down and back up again.

My Lift Master garage door will not close. It makes the closing noise but the door does not slide down. Whcan I talk to to fix this?

Sounds like you have a chain drive garage door opener and you hear a humming sound when you push the wall console. The motor is running but the chain does not move. You need to replace the gear & sprocket assembly.

Is the door stuck in the open position? If so the trolley is probably jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. Loosen the chain enough to free the trolley and then run the opener until the door is closed. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' on the side of the motor unit and turn this control 2 complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

Craftsman garage door opener 1/2 hp will not open door

It sounds like your chain is out of sync with the limit switches. Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket on top of the motor unit. Now run the opener until the sprocket runs counterclockwise and stops. Now with everything attached and the door in the open position replace and tighten the chain. You are now in sync. You may need to tweak the up and down limit controls which are on the side of the motor unit.

Sounds like the drive gear is stripped. Remove the cover and take a look. It is white nylon and is just in front of the motor.

Garage door will not open

You can fix this by loosening the chain enough that you can lift it off the sprocket. Then run the opener until the sprocket turns counterclockwise and stops. Now with the door in the open position replace the chain. This will get the chain running the right direction. You will have to adjust the open and close limits along with the force adjustments but that will all be covered in your owners manual.

Craftsman opener motor works, but chain does not move.

If the motor is working but the chain does not move you must remove the cover on the motor and check to see that the chain is on the sprocket. If the chain is on the sprocket and the sprocket is not moving but the motor shaft is moving then the sprocket must be retightened onto the motor shaft.
