The shredder just all of a sudden won't do anything. When I put a sheet of paper in the slot, it usually cuts on and shreds. Just sits there with no response at all. Nothing in reverse either. I cked the power source & it's ok. Is it dead?

The most likely cause is that the shredded paper, has tightly wrapped itself in the blades. One possible cause is by shredding labels (like Avery Labels) or any paper which has adhesive on it. (Causes it to attach the cut pieces to between the cutters.) It reaches a point where there is so much bound up on the blades that even a single sheet of paper will cause an overload.
The fix is simple to describe, but difficult to accomplish. You must go in and manually remove all of the paper bound up in the blades. It's not easy, I found that using a needle nose pliers worked best. Lot of digging and tugging (paper will pack between the blades very tightly). Sometimes a small, slotted screwdriver will aid in being able to pry out bits and pieces (it's not going to come out in anything but small chunks; at best).
Don't forget to unplug your shredder before you start; those blades are sharp.
This happened several times with my last shredder *Royal), but not once with my current shredder (Fellows). I tend to believe that the better quality shredders are worth the extra money.
But any shredder will become a problem if you shred labels (like Avery) or paper products that has adhesive on it. (Another common mistake is shredding junk mail that has any kind of adhesive associated with it. Best to open and check first.)
One other thing, ALL shredders need to be oiled on a regular basis. They make special oil for this, you can usually find small bottles of it at Wally World or the like. Best practice is to squirt some shredder oil in a serpentine pattern. over a piece of paper to be shredded and run it through. Do this whenever you empty the shredder bin. (Important for the life of your shredder.)
Hi - Shredders don't have suction, but if the blades have gone dull, it can't pull the paper in because it can't cut it. Try one sheet or even half a sheet.
The other possibility is that you are not putting the paper against the paper sensor or the sensor is brokern or blocked. This sensor is usually in the center of the shredder slot. Test it by putting a piece of paper a bit down and seeing if the "on" light comes on.
If the blades are dull, it is probably cheaper to get another shredder on craigslist or staples. I don't know, but am assuming this is a small home office unit.
If the sensor is not working, you can try to clear it.
Investment in repair depends on investment in the scanner. Tell me more and i'll try to research it a bit.
I have had the electric eye come out. they kind of lock in there. I have had a couple push back. I had to take glue the electric eyes into the slot. like I said I have had this happen on two fellows shredders. good luck
Try pouring some shredder oil into the cutting blades where you insert the paper then run the unit in reverse for a while. Then put some of the shredder oil onto a sheet of paper and try shredding the sheet of paper. Some lubrication on a x-cut shredder does not hurt.
I have taken many shredders apart and found them so clogged up with shreds of paper and too much oil will turn into paper mud.Be bold and take the top off and clean it out. Unplug the power source and when removing the top , be careful because their will be a short cable connecting the top to the circuit board. Easy to damage.
