My AO 966 printer has stopped working for the third time.
I updated my computer last year and it only comes with Vista and Microsoft has not even began to get the bugs out of it. I recieved a messag that Microsoft had made a update that had stopped the 966 from working.
I am trying to get a answer to the fix now. In the mean time I have hooked my Hp C4180 back up.

HP bought Compaq a few years ago and apparently stopped supporting that printer after Win XP. There is no driver for vista. you may want to try the drivers for Win 2000 as Vista has similar code as Win 2000, and some of those drivers work in Vista. see:
You need to restore your computer to a date previous to your Adobe 9 install. Click the following:
Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-System Restore. Choose an available date prior to the date you installed the problematic software.
Did you do an in place upgrade or a custom install of Win7? What is your printer status in the printer and faxes window? If you see an exclamation point, it may be that you need to install an updated driver. Often you can let the Windows troubleshoot device fix the issue successfully. In that same printer and faxes window, check if you have files in the print spooler. You may need to clear the old queued files.
If you can't delete them directly the spooler window, you may need to stop the spooler and restart it. In XP, this was easy in the command prompt window (Command run works but you do one line each time. In Vista and probably in Win7 you'll have to do this as administrator. Assuming the spooler commands haven't changed, type "net stop spooler" (enter) then "net start spooler" (enter) without the quotes. (I know this worked in 2K and XP; I've never checked it in Vista or Win7.)
In addition, many USB printers need to have the USB cable removed from both the printer and the computer when you turn off and unplug the printer to reset the printer.
A final step to try is running the following patch from Dell: http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R166245&SystemID=PRN_ALL_A966&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=11887&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=1&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=2&libid=40&fileid=224506; this totally removes the printer from your computer. Then you can reinstall it after rebooting the computer (wait until it tells you to restart).
Hi, The all in one solution software you used in XP doesn't work with Vista.
But you can still scan and copy by using Windows Photo Gallery.
1. Click on files tab at the top in Window Photo Gallery.
2. Click on import from camera or scanner.
3. Highlight your scanner icon (ie Dell 966) then click import.
4. New scan window will popup, now you can preview or scan using this basic looking Vista utility.
Are you running windows Vista? Was the printer working at one time? If using Vista try this. Open Control panel, open system. Click on hardware tab, click device manager button. Scroll down till you see the yellow ! point. Right click on it once & choose update driver (a left click). A pop-up window will open. Choose No not at this time, click next. Click Install from a list or specific location. Click the Browse button. Scroll to your C:\ drive & click on it. Scroll down to the folder Window\system32 & click on it once. Click OK. With any luck windows Vista will re-find your USB & your printer.
Lastly, Microsoft may have created a fix in Vista update (KB940199). So run Windows Update just to be sure.
Please drop by & let me know if this helped.
Good luck fosstone!
Have a good day.
