Question about Refrigerators

Amana side by side not cooling well, will not freeze water.

I have an Amana side by side that does not freeze and cools poorly. It is an SXD22S2l MF# p1190416wl. I have cleaned the condenser under the unit very thoroughly. The unit runs, the compressor runs, the condones outlet from the compressor gets hot. The fans run. The evaporator coils only get cold at the very top. The first few inches are painfully cold, by the first turn it is cold, none of the front coils feel cool at all. This is after 30 minutes of running with the cover off so no air is going over them. I would think they would be freezing since the air is not there to warm them up. The defrost heater is not on, in fact I undid the clips so that even if it does come on it won't warm the coils, and it is not sitting on anything that can melt or burn, so don't worry. Before digging in this far I replaced the adaptive defrost controller but I really don't thing that is the issue. Even if I tape the light switches up so it doesn't know the door is opening (all three of the door switches) it still does the same thing. I suspect low Freon or something with the evaporator, but that is beyond my tool set to test.

Have I missed something? I need more information on how to determine the proplem so that I can judge if it should be replaced or repaired.

Thank you.

    My original posting states:

"The evaporator coils only get cold at the very top. The first few inches are painfully cold, by the first turn it is cold, none of the front coils feel cool at all. This is a very thorough examination in my opinion. I don't believe the coils are the problem. They are clean, free of ice even free of frost since they are only cold for the first few inches of pipe. The evaporator fan is running and the air flow is unobstructed and properly flowing over the evaporator, other than when I was examining it.

The unit is in the same place it has been the entire time. The area behind the unit is very clean. The area under the unit is very clean. I used a specially adapted tube to vacuum the condensing coils under the unit very clean. I clean the area around condensing fan, I even cleaned the condensing fan blade. The fan is turning at good speed with no vibration or other indication that it is malfunctioning and noticeable amount of air is being drawn into the front of the unit. t I have even moved the unit out an extra inch. The house is not very 66 or so most of the time.

The coiling coils are pristine clean and completely free of ice. This is because they are not cold enough to form ice. The fan that draws air over the evaporator coils is working well and moving plenty of air. The heater is off. I have touched it. I have also replaced the adaptive controller and I have disable the switches that the adaptive control uses to adjust the defrost cycle. The only thing I don't have is a strip recorder of the defrosters duty cycle but I really don't think it is the defroster. I have tried to disconnect the defrost heater but this causes the condenser fan to stop, obviously not a good thing. If anybody knows how to by pass the heating element I will. However I seriously doubt the defrost is the problem since I have run the unit with the cooling coil (evaporator) open and they are not getting cold and the heater is definitely not on.

Am I out of diagnostics short of measuring the refrigerant?

If it need refrigerant it must be leaking it. Is it economical to find a leak. Is it economical to replace a compressor?

  • spam1246 Jan 25, 2009

Is there a sight glass or anything that can be used to check the refrigerant level?

  • spam1246 Jan 25, 2009

Well this isn't definitive but I've got to decide to spend at a minimum the service call charge to determine if this is the problem or just assume it is and move on. This sounds like good advice.

I would have to agree with you on the low freon. i had a super nice black side by side that did what yours is and it turned out to be low on freon and had to be recheaged. it cost me just over 100.00 to have it done but was well worth the money

If your freezer is still cold then the defrost heater is not staying on. Most likely your fan in the freezer is not working or defrost system is not working. If you open the freezer and hear a fan on with the compressor running, then your fan is ok. If the compressor is running and no fan noise, then you need to get a new fan. If the fan is running then most likely you have a defrost problem. For the time being, just unplugged the unit and remove the back wall of the freezer section. With the back cover removed look at the evap coils. If they are covered in frost then your defrost heater is not coming on. You can take a hair dryer and defrost the coils or leave the unit unplugged with the doors open for 24 hours. If you do have frost built up then there is a problem with the bimetal switch, heater, or defrost timer. Good luck, hope this help...

Look for any leaks in cooling circuit.
These problems sometimes depends upon the location of the unit. Did you recently move it from some other place (even within the room) ?

Amana side by side not cooling well, will not freeze water.

if you are only seeing frost on the top portion of the evap coil then you then it sounds as if the unit has sealed system problem (low freon or bad compressor). if the unit is less than 5 years old and made prior to nov '06 it should have a sealed system warranty. if the unit is out of warranty you may want to start looking at new refrigs. good luck peyton
