If you take a look at this diagram, you should be able to see all the inner workings of that area and decide if you want to repair it. I think anyone with the most basic mechanical skills could easily handle this repair. See parts 62,63,67, etc. Could just be the spring is off or broken. Let us know what you find! http://www.partselect.com/Schematics/GE/00112435i01.gif

SOURCE: Ice maker

Smitty, if this is a GSS20, General Electric model you have an electronic model ice-maker. There is no water adjustment screw. Here's how the fill works; when the harvest is finished the icemaker will enter the fill cycle. The amount of water entering the mold is controlled by temperature. Before any water enters the mold has to be at least 35.6 degrees. Water entering the mold will cause the mold temperature to change, effecting the resistance of a thermistor. The first fill activates the water valve for 5 seconds. The thermistor checks the temp of the mold. If the temperature of the mold exceeds 39 degrees the icemaker will end the fill cycle and enter the freeze cycle. If the temp of the mold is still below 39 degrees, the control will assume that an insufficient amount of water entered the mold, and energize the water valve for another 2.5 seconds. Now it will check the temp again. If the mold is still below 39 degrees a third fill of 2.5 seconds will occur. You could have a thermistor that's out of spec. Usually on this model, the power LED on the icemaker will flash 1/2 second on and 1/2 second off if the thermistor is open or shorted. You could have a water valve that is not seating properly and allowing more water to enter the ice-maker. You can run a cycle on this ice maker by turning it off, then on again and pushing the feeler arm in 3 times within 15 seconds. Watch how the fill works. Anyway, outside of the excellent information posted by 24 seven, This will give you an idea of how the icemaker works. Catriver.

SOURCE: GSS25LGMF WW Will not dispense ICE or Water, lights are on

If the water does not dispense, it may be that the water line is frozen in the refrig. section. The solution is to lower the temperature setting of the refrig sect a number or two.

If the ice bin is full and does not dispense, it is probably a bad or frozen auger motor. To test it open freezer door and remove the ice bin by sliding it out. Then hold the door switch while you press the dispenser lever on the outside of the door. You should see the motor turn in the back of the fridge. If nothing happens, it should be replaced. If it just hums, it may be frozen. In that case, wait till the freezer finishes defrosting and test again.

Why won't my ice maker work

Hello Cynthia! Most likely the little "flap" inside the door of the dispenser is not closing all the way. My advice is to take all your ice out of the inside of the freezer. Clean and dry out that area as good as you can. Take your hand, and from the bottom, reach up and feel the flap that should close all the way when ice or water is dispensed. Take warm water, pour it from the top, you won't need much, and dry off the little flap as good as can be.
Now, press the ice button, and when you let go, you should hear a clunk or deep sounding slap, that is from the flap closing properly. Same goes for the water. However some manufacturers don't open the flap for water. From this point forward, assuming you heard the flap close, be sure it makes that same noise every single time you use the ice dispenser, or the water dispenser, and your problem should be solved.

The flap on the ice maker dispenser will not close.

Problem with these flaps are that they have plastic hinge which work great for sometime when they are new and have shiny inner surface but with use they develop minor scratches which cause resistance and hence partial closing. Either get the flap replaced or apply Vaseline jelly in the moving part of the hinge.

Walk in freezer solenoid not opening

Many Kenmore side-by-side refrigerators have an ice and water dispenser installed on the outside of the freezer door. The ice dispenser has a flap that opens to allow ice to be released, and closes after dispensing to keep the cold air inside of the freezer. The dispenser flap is opened and closed by a solenoid, that when energized pulls the plunger attached to the flap, opening the door. If the flap stops opening and closing, it is likely due to a faulty solenoid.

Freezer door ice dispenser flap will not close completely. The cold air is leaking out of the freezer. What can I do to fix?

There are multiple parts to the dispenser for GE. You say that door isn't closing properly, which could mean that the solenoid isn't working properly, or that the door flap retainer itself is broken, I want to say that they make a complete kit for it but not for certain,
