Can't connect To internet w/ Wireless

I can't connect to the Internet -- the icon on the trey says no signal -- we have wireless connectivity in our house through Comcast. My wife's computer connects just fine. I have an older Dell system and use a D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G630 wireless card that fits in a PCMCIA card slot on the side of ym laptop. Could the card be failing? It has worked fine for several years. I haven't done anything to my laptop or installed anything new that might change settings. Do I need to go out and buy a new card? Is there anything else I can do to try and troubleshoot this problem on my own?

when you say uninstall, do you mean take the card out? I did that and then put it back in -- is that what you mean?

  • davehammond Jan 24, 2009

If drivers have to be installed or downloaded how do i do that when I can't connec to the Internet?

Try uninstalling it and re-installing it. the problem may be with its drivers.

well, usually when you put the card in, the laptop automatically detects it right and installs it. but with your case, you may want to check the wifi card in the device manager. if its enabled and working properly. pls check with the wificards manufacturers site because they may have updates for your card. it seems that this may be like about compatibility issue with the old dell laptop your using.

you can do that using computer there. all you need to do is check whether there is a driver update for your D-link airplus to be able to work with your dell laptop in terms of drivers.

as for the OS youre using, if its WinXP, try using windows Zero Config. As for Vista, it is automatic.

if there is such new drivers for your dlink airplus, you need to download it and copy that to a flashdrive and install it on the dell laptop.

How do I turn on my wireless connection

If your computer will not connect to a wireless Internet signal, one of the first things to check is whether your computer's wireless switch is turned on.
Many laptop computers have a switch located on the exterior of the computer that controls its ability to connect to wireless networks.
This switch can be accidentally turned off, preventing users from connecting to the Internet.

Determine if your computer's wireless connectivity has been disabled by viewing the network icon in the lower toolbar on your computer's desktop.
When there is a disruption in your computer's Internet connection, the icon will have a red X through it. For further information, go to the computer's Network and Sharing Center where you can troubleshoot connectivity issues and view available wireless networks.
If the computer isn't recognizing any wireless connections (and you're sure that there are wireless signals in your area), the likely problem is that the wireless switch is turned off.
Locate the wireless switch on your computer.
It may be located on either side of the laptop or along the back or front.
If you aren't sure whether your computer has a wireless switch, check the user guide that came with the unit.
Determine whether the switch is currently in the "On" or "Off" position.
The switch will be clearly labeled.
Push the switch in the direction of the "On" position to ensure that it is turned on.
If the switch was already turned on, see if there is a keyboard combination that will activate your laptop's wireless capability.
The key combination for your laptop will depend on your computer's manufacturer, but will generally involve a combination of the Function, Control or Alt and the F1 to F12 keys.
Check your user manual for your computer's key combination.

Connected wireless to router, excellent signal, but unable to connect to internet.

connected to wireless router with excellent signal may not means you are connected to internet. make sure your modem provided by internet service provider has signal! connect your computer to modem directly bypassing router. If you are online that means your internet is functional. Then connect modem to your Linksys router and use your wireless to log on to internet.
Your router wireless signal active and excellent means you are connected to router not necessarily the internet. The modem supplied by your internet service provider with active internet should be connected to you router on WAN port!
good luck!!

With wireless connected, internet explore is not working

Hi, if the wireless is working and the status icon on the bottom right shows connected, speed and signal strength and internet explorer is not working, do the following to make sure if it's problem with internet explorer or wireless connection:
click on start > run > cmd, click ok
type: ipconfig. it should show your ip address. Also type for example: ping www.google.com
if it pings successfully, you have internet connection. Refresh your internet explorer or close it and reopen. Also you may want to log into any instant messenger such as yahoo. I hope this helps

Laptop won't scan wireless

check the wireless physical switch if it's on, check the device manager too if the wireless adapter is enabled..
if the wireless part of your laptop is turned on and still not detecting signal and you are 100% sure that wireless signal is present then update the driver of the wireless adapter of your laptop.. if it's built-in, call the tech support team of the laptop :)

Linksys wireless connected to router, signal fine, no web pages

First thing i would try is power cycling your equipment. Unplug the router and the Modem-
Plug the modem in first and once all the lights come on- plug in your router- then restart your computer.

Have just bought a computer second hand and have just got internet running with 100% signal but cannot connect because we cannot find local area connection to access files

As dragoness1 says, you don't need a LAN to connect. Right click wireless icon in system tray (bottom right of screen), select "show available Wireless networks". Select one and click connect. If they're not from your own Internet service, they may be protected by a password.
