Just got a Gateway with Windows Vista Home Premium.  Was working fine.  Now can't even open it.  Shows our two user accounts but wont prompt for password, clicking does nothing , clicking anywhere on Welcome screen does nothing. Have tried: rebooting, unplugging and rebooting, rebooting in Safe Mode, System Recovery using F8 and F10, and nada.  Please Help.

There are Spyware/malware resulting to this kind of behavior. You can remove your System Disk to another system that have antispiware up-to-date database. Kaspersky or AVG Internet Security are very effective.
Or else Im afraid you will need to format you OS drive to eradicate virus and malwares and reinstall the OS

Error 815

First you have to make sure you should have working internet connection. Error 815 mostly related to ISP side so suggest you to contact ISP first.
You can also try below steps if ISP says everything is fine.

If the connection can be established by using other device/system, please create a new administrator account on the Windows Vista machine to troubleshoot the issue:

1.Click Start > type user account and click the User Accounts control panel.

2.In the User Account control panel, click Manager another account.

3.Click Create a new account, type an account name > select Administrator and then click Create Account.

4.Logoff and logon with the new account and try to establish the connection to check if the issue persists.

To disable all unwanted start up items in vista, please follow the mentioned steps-

1. Click on the Vista start icon in the bottom left corner of your screen.
windows_start_logo.gif 2. Type MSCONFIG in the search box and then either press enter on your keyboard or double-click on the MSCONFIG program that appears in the search results.

Or, if you're already logged into Vista as an administrator, you may see a box asking you if you would like to continue.

4. Once you have successfully passed through Microsoft's User Account Control roadblock, Vista will launch Microsoft's System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab.
vista_msconfig.gif
4. This takes you to a page with a list of "startup items." Startup items are programs that are automatically loaded every time you turn on your computer. Some startup programs are absolutely necessary, others are simply a waste of RAM.

Please uncheck the ones that you don't want.

2- To change home page in Internet Explorer, please follow below mentioned steps-

1. Click on the Vista start icon in the bottom left corner of your screen.

2. Type inetcpl.cpl in search and hit Enter key.

3. Click on tools tab and select Internet options.

4. Click on General tab and select use blank under home page.

5. Click on apply and then OK.

The home page would be blank.

Explore won't open in Vista (not IE, I mean windows file explorer)

Hi,

Most likely a damaged or altered registry entry. Clicks start and type
'regedit' and hit <enter>. Expand the keys at left to reach:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Click on this key, then locate the shell string in the right pane. Double
click it, replace the contents with just:

explorer.exe

Click ok, then close the registry editor and reboot.

This will resolve the issue.

Good Luck.
