The casing at the saw end will have an inside case that is bolted either from behind the gears or from the armature side by screws. This has to be undone to allow the bearing to separate from the case

SOURCE: How to replace main bearing in a Makita GA5000 5'' angle grinder

with the head off and the brushes out you just need to turn the metal plate so you can tap the plastic body down on a hard surface. the armature should just fall out with a few taps. to get the gear off you need to use a puller on the gear. once the gear is off you can remove the woodruff key and use a puller on the bearing. to get the new bearing on, push it on by tapping it on at the centre of the bearing, a 5/16 deep socket should work to get the bearing on.

These are notorious for burning out armatures.
The replacement process is pretty involved, I would not attempt unless you are comfortable.
Remove the brushes
Remove the 3 Screws hold the motor assy to the saw
Remove the screws holding the motor housing together.
Separate the housing and you should be able to see right away if the armature is burnt (many times the windings actually blow apart)

Often when the armature burns out it also melts the brush holder assy - I would recommend replacing it as well.
If the armature appears fine then I would lean toward the switch. Makita BSS611 18V LXT Lithium Ion 6 1 2 Circular Saw Parts

Armature replacement

If there are brushes, they are hanging up on the armature. Take out the brushes. They are usually held in by black covers with screwdriver slots in them.

Saw growling

the problem is poling and that means the armature is touching the field shoes and is shorting out. If you have replace d the field coils then may be the shoes have not been fitted in tightly enough and the clearance is not as it should be. Worn bushes or bearings will give the same effect as when the current is on the armature is pulled to the shoe.. Ensure that the end caps are fitted correctly to ensure alignment and tighten the screws evenly around the case.

Motor growls when switched on.

The armature is hitting on the field shoes from misalignment of the end caps and or bearings.. When the power is applied the armature instead of spinning is attracted to the metal shoes of the fields and is touching and shorting out.

Makita LS1221, started heavy sparking from both brushes with greatly reduced speed. Brushes are ok. I'm assuming it is a shorted winding on either the armature or stator, how do I determine which...

you need to make sure the brushes move freely in the tubes and if they do I would suspect the armature is bad. LOOK for discoloration in the commutator thru the brush tubes.

Hi

Not sure if you want to remove the center base. If yes with the center bolt removed it should go.

If this can help view the parts diagram.
