Question about Magic Chef MCB780W Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Sharp Carousel R-530CW

I've had this unit for over 9 years and it still cooks great, but now it runs the fan, light and turntable even when cooking is done. With the door closed, the llight, fan and t/table runs continuously, but not the magnetron. You can set all controls and hit START and the magnetron comes on and cooks as usual, but when it stops and the beep goes off, the fan, light and t/table keep running. We leave the door open until we're ready to use it. Does this sound like a simple, inexpensive fix, or one where a control board has to be replaced, probably at a cost rivaling a new unit?

Hi, I am not sure of the cost concerning the control board, however, it does sound like a control board problem, or a door switch problem, I would need to see the specific unit diagram to know for sure, but many microwaves, not all, but many, have a door switch related to that part of the circuit, usually the fuse would blow at that point, but there again, it depends on the circuit. I would suggest you get the unit checked soon however. Hope that helps somewhat, and thank you.

My microwave stopped working you can input time but when you push start nothing happens it has power and everything just will not start its like the start button does not work

Possibly a bad door switch behind the holes where the latch hooks go into. Usually with the bad switch the timer counts down but nothing runs. It all depends on which switch is bad. Usually 3 switches inside.

My microwave is 25 years old, will it be working to maximum efficiency

If all the settings work and the door closes ok . why throw it out ?. It may not be quite as efficient power wise as a brand new one. the few cents extra to run it against the price of a new one, I would stay with old faithful.

Sharp Carousel R530BK microwave won't cook unless light pressure is kept on the door button.

There are door switches and one of them is evidently out of adjustment or the little actuator arm on it is.

Sharp R-520KS - When the door is opened, the light and fan comes on and the carousel rotates. I don't know if microwaves are emitted. How can I stop the fan from coming on and the carousel from...

You can tell if microwaves are being emitted if you get warm standing in front of it (seriously). But I wouldn't recommend that unless you want to cook yourself.

First thing that comes to mind is the door interlocks are out of adjustment or bad. Home microwave ovens are not supposed to operate like that. Some commercial models start the fan right away and run it after the cooking cycle is completed but I've never heard of a consumer model that does that.

Find your closest servicer here and have them take a look.

Sharp Carousel Model R-1440 won't stop running

It may be a sticking door switch (upper or lower, not the middle one) or the mount of one of those switches may be loose, broken or out of alignment.

See these files:

http://www.microwavedisplay.com/disassembly.txt
http://www.microwavedisplay.com/doorsw.txt

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Then you can get to the switches.

Or it may be a sticking relay on the control board. We regularly repair these control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week or so with a one-year guarantee.

If during this unwanted operation the oven lamp, internal cooling fan, and stirrer are all stuck on, but the turntable is not on moving and the oven is not actually cooking, then I would suspect relay RY1 on the control board is stuck.

That's what I suspect in your case.

Unit makes a loud buzzing sound whenever the unit has power.

We see (and repair) this a lot. The problem is on the control panel, which we regularly repair nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

This light failure often occurs when a bulb goes out and the filament shorts, or when the bulbs are removed or installed without first unplugging the oven from the power line. Either can cause such a failure on the controller.

This can often also affect the exhaust fan operation, too. The lights and fan can be inoperable or stuck on too.

Details of our service and critical safety information and disassembly information is at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

Melted carousel in microwave / bad smell

For the smell, do a Google search for "smell microwave" or "odor microwave" for many great tips.

If you need a new turntable support, you can order Sharp parts from Tritronics at http://www.wehaveparts.com

Cooks fine, but fan & carousel run slow and light is dim

It sounds perfectly normal. A microwave generally draws about 13 amps or more when cooking at full power. That's a considerable amount. This current draw will actually "load down" the power line, resulting in a small but measurable drop in the voltage. The decreased voltage means the light will be dimmer and the motors for the fan and turntable will run a bit slower. BUT if you ever have _chronic_ flickering, dimming or brightening lights in your home, it could be the result of a bad connection on the neutral, etc., which can lead to a very dangerous condition. Once in a while is okay, but if it happens a lot, your landlord or electric company should examine the lines.
