Why doesn't the Sunbeam handheld sewing machine work?

Uses four AA batteries. All parts seem to move freely, batteries are new but the machine doesn't run. Suggestions, please.

SOURCE: vintage new home (XR-VII model 990)sewing machine with a handwheel problem

Can you post a photo of the machine, cannot find a reference to this model.

1st just check around the bobbin case area for jammed thread, also in/around the *takeup lever (up/down arm) mechanism near needlebar, as thread often gets wound around and jams the shaft

If it really seems like corrosion in an elderly & neglected machine.... disconnect from power, and using a small rocking movement of the handwheel to identify the parts that should move and with all the covers removed and in a dry well ventilated area with old newspaper to absorb excess,

.......give a light spray of WD40 or similar penetraing lubricant on horizontal Top shaft at each end where it joins main body

..... the region that operates the *take up lever cranks and counterbalance

.....the handwheel has a clutch mechanism, so if you can undo the wheel to access this, it may well be dry and need lube.

.....In the base is another horizontal shaft lube each end and a little where the gears meet to change the drive direction under the hook race/bobbin.

With the same gentle rocking motion of handwheel, see if there is any improvement ...but do not force anything......(to stitch forward, the handwheel spins "over the falls" toward you)

You may not see immediate improvement, so leave overnight and be patient, it may take several days........just be very sure there is nothing jammed anywhere.

SOURCE: missing part of sewing machine

That should be your foot I'm guessing?!? The machine should have come with several?!? Like, a zipper foot, button hole foot etc. Mine (Janome SX 2122) are stored in my machine, in the top section where you load the thread. , you can use one of the others. Mine also has a spare basic foot...have a look and see if it's there either in or with your machine or with some of the extra parts it should have come with (may run into troubles if it's second-hand you may not even have all of the parts)...if you don't have a basic foot you can often just use one of the other feet (like a zipper foot or something), which may not quite hold the material down, depending on what you're sewing, at least until you get a chance to get another basic foot...which you can get from any store that sells material or sewing machines. Hope that helps :)

SOURCE: Temp misplaced Pfaff 1471 manual during move.

Unplug the machine and check to make sure that the contacts for the batteries are clean and that the batteries are installed with the correct positive and negative orientation. Plug the machine back on and test.

SOURCE: when starting to sew, cotton

it is possible that the needle & thread are not compatable
here's how to check
Cut 6-8 inch piece of thread of the spool you are going to use for your project
Take the needle you are going to use for the project
& insert the thread thru the eye of the needle
& lift one end of the thread to a 45 degree angle
& if the needle is the right size for the thread it will slide down the thread
But if the needle hangs on the thread you need one size larger needle for the thread

Elnita 130 sewing machine is weak when starting

So, the motor is straining to run the machine? Your machine is mechanical? Then, the old oil has most likely solidified and is preventing the machine parts from moving freely. Do not force the motor until you can get the issue addressed or you may burn out the motor. The following method has worked on several old Berninas that were seized:

My sewing machine started to sew slow and seem like it is working hard. Won't sew normal. Hasn't been that long since it was last serviced/oiled. Any suggestions?

Slow is due to friction in the shuttle drive and key moving bars and joint. Apply few drops of petrol/kerosene and run for few minutes. Then apply normal lubricating oils meant for machines.

Need a mignon Aa battery for my Pfaff.

Your local guy is right. AA batteries are a type of cell (think size, voltage and shape) . The brand doesn't matter.

The motor runs on my Singer Merrit 8734 but the needle doesn't move.

if you have to undo the clutch to wind the bobbin, then try undoing the clutch again & then retightening the clutch & see if that helps & if it doesn't help the machine needs to be checked

My juki serger mo-634de suddenly stopped working. Lights on, wheels and parts move freely, even stitching seems to work if I turn it manually, but nothing happens when I push the pedal. No sound. ...

Hi, I have the exact same machine. it sounds like the wire from the foot pedal to the machine is broken. You would still get power from the wall to the machine to light the light, but no 'gas pedal'. You could maybe get an electrian to test the connection under the foot pedal and if the wire is damaged? or maybe the part that plugs in the machine is cracked or damaged?
Good luck! Annette
