Question about Whirlpool 25.6 cu. ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with In-Door-Ice Dispensing System

1 Answer

Broken pins What exactly happens when one of the pins holding the gear on the icemaker is broken. I have a new Whirlpool with one pin broken, it will make ice in the test mode but not eject it. Could this possibly be the cause? It also will not fill when in normal operation.

Please provide the specific model number of your refrigerator so more detail information can be provided. You description doesn't quite make sense.

To clarify, it won't stop making ice? If so,try the following:
Remove the ice maker.
Remove the wire bail.
Remove the front pop off panel, then the panel with the gear on front by removing 3 screws.
Look at the cam that the wire bail goes into. It should have a plastic pin that fits in the switch under it.
Mine had sheared off, so I driled a very small hole where the pin was, and put a finishing nail there. Cut to size. Mine works fine now.

My son shoved a spoon into the icemaker bucket and it's jammed. Now neither the ice maker nor the water dispenser works. I have emptied the ice from the bucket and stopped it from making ice. I can see the...

My ice dispenser lever stopped working. I took the face plate off by first removing the tray, grabbing the bottom face plate and pulling straight back. I found that the internal switch was displaced because the retention pins (plastic) were broken. This caused the switch to be set back from the dispenser arm. I'm ordering a new bracket that holds the switches. Hope this helps.

also I found that the internal switch was displaced because the retention pins (plastic) were broken. This caused the switch to be set back from the dispenser arm. Bad bad design!
Instead, I replaced the pins with screws.... never coming apart again. Now how long before the Ice side breaks?!?!?!?!

I had this same problem.
Whirlpool Side-by-Side Model#: ED20DFXEB01

I removed the front panel from the water/ice dispenser - just to make sure the problem was not with any of the connections there. Just put a meter on the wires to verify current. All was good.

I pulled the refrigerator out and removed the valve assembly for the water/ice dispenser. Since the ice was working and the water was not, I simply swapped the connections on the solenoids. Sure enough, when I pressed the switch to dispense water, it came through the ice maker. Answer: bad solenoid on the water side...

I happen to live close to a commercial appliance store so I took the valve assembly (along with the model number for the fridge) over there and ordered a new one. $50 and 24hrs later, I'm good to go. In my case the part I needed was part# D7742204 (technically an Amana part but was the exact same thing) and it's a very easy part to swap out on my own.
If you are still curious as to how to remove the face plate... There are 2 small slots on the bottom of the faceplate. Pry out on those and the plate slides up and off from there.

Ice in bucket freezes into a lump, mechanism freezes

it sounds like the ice chute door is stuck open. on this model it can slip off the "hinge pin" or the plastic that holds the pin can break. if the flap is broken it is replacable. the pin can be put back in. if the plastic that holds the pin is broken, you need to replace the whole door. expect to wait 6-8 weeks for a new door, sooner if lucky. cost is $400 +++ more for stainless.I hope the pin fell out. hope this helps

Whirlpool gold ice machine not working

The most likely cause is the water solenoid behind the fridge. Take an ohm meter and test across the two terminals and it should NOT ohm out (beep). If it does not ohm out I would replace the P.C. Board kit, emitter & receiver icemaker control

How do you replace a bad thermostat in an icemaker?

First you have to remove the icemaker. The is one 1/4in screw holing the in on the bottom back right corner. Once that is removed you can remove the plastic shield that it was screwed into by pulling up and back on it. After that the icemaker can be pulled straight out towards you. (it might take a little force and wiggling of the ice maker to do so) Unplug the icemaker by inserting a small flat screw driver under the tab at the harness.
On the right of the icemaker is a white square cap. Remove it to expose a big gear. Check the pins in the middle to make sure they aren't broken.
If the pins check ok then the problem is either the motor or thermostat. To replace the motor the whole part in the picture above (the Module) needs replacing (Part#W10122536) To replace it remove the three screws in the top two and bottom right corners, pull off the module and replace it with the new one.
To replace the thermostat (part#627985) remove the module and set it aside. Under where the module sat you will find two screws. Remove them and pull out on the black plastic casing. (Be careful because the the ice arm and stripper will fall off when you do this. In the bottom middle of the opposite side is the thermostat. Pry it out and place the new one in. You'll need some stuff called alumilastic. (Part#4317852) Put a dap on the new thermostat and put it all back together.

After It all back together and in its place it may take a couple of hours for it to make the first batch of ice. Good Luck and let me know if you need any clarification.

Whirlpool GD5RHAXNQ00 Ice maker not making ice

We had a similar problem and there was a broken/stripped gear in the icemaker. A&E replaced it to the tune of $150 or so. I don't recall exactly but I recall my husband thinking he could replace the entire icemaker for the price we paid to repair it. The gear make the ice tray flip out the ice once frozen. Good luck, hope that helps a little.

Whirlpool ed2fhexnq00 icemaker will not dispense filled with ice

can you see the ice maker's white cover?? try to pry that off , usually a little space for a ***** driver to be inserted into where the body of ice maker and the cover meet in lower right corner. after removing check the gear in center of ice machine. there should be 2 little tabs that hold that gear on." picture trying to snap that gear on , the tabs would hold it in place" do those tabs appear tobe broken?? at least one anyway(although small ther should be a distinct space between the tabs where they sprung back into place) if theyre broken, theres your problem you need to replace the ice maker assy,(entire unit)

Ice maker not working

the icemaker will run at 120v ac +- 10% so 108 v is within range altho marginally. since you have the icemaker removed. remove the front cover and check to see if the drive gear is broken or if the 2 center pins that hold the gear in place are twisted or broken. this is most likely the problem. the motor module can be replace very easily part # is 8201515

the normal home position for this icemaker is at the 2:00 position facing the front of the icemaker. if it is any other position the motor module is almost always the culprit..

Whirlpool pin retainer is broken on ice dispenser

this is easy. there is a small area beside where the piece broke off. bend a small peice of metal coat hanger at a 90 degree angle, (this is so you can make your new hole on the correct line) heat the end with a lighter, burn a smallhole thru this area beside where the previous hole existed. now throw away the old pin that you were using and use a piece of coat hanger cut to the right length. on one end bend about one half inch to 90 degree angle, feed thru new hole and thru your spring and flap and thru to opposite side hole and lastly make small bend to keep wire from sliding out. ta da, fixed. problem solved for about two cents. i have successfully repaired many of these doors.
