Question about Sony DECK, MECH WITH AUTO REVERSE Single Dual Cassette Deck

1 Answer

Sony WE605S won't play in back direction any more

I recently replace the capstan and square belts in this dual cassette deck and now it only plays in one direction. What is puzzling to me is that both sides are behaving the same way. Both will rewind and fastforward and play in the right direction but both no longer play in the left direction as they used to.
Any advice?

It's not just that it doesn't auto-reverse, it won't play at all in the reverse direction. It plays fine when I hit the > button, but won't play at all in the reverse direction (i.e. the other side of the tape) when I hit the < button. When I do hit the < it sounds like it wants to play but can't and so it switches back to the other direction. Interesting it does rewind in the < direction.

You need to select LOOP function to play auto-back and its symbol is .. <=> .. like that.

If the square belt kinda serpentines in and around a couple pulleys (or did originally) then it did not get put back on correctly. try to think of another way it could be threaded through the pulleys.

The left side of New W-890R cassette deck plays at triple time. Right side plays normal. Tried to adjust with Pitch control but not the answer.

The transistor in the servo capstan motor is probably shorted- this happen now and then and you need a new Capstan motor. The question is most dual cassette decks are not worth the repair.
If the adjustment make no difference then that is likely the problem.

Belt diagram

The belts are universal in most of the machines and it goes around the motor and the capstans in the twin deck. What is needed is to thread the beld and manually turn the motor to see the direction of movement of the capstan.
Removal of the machanism is to be done with care and refixing of the back plate to the capstan and motor.

I replaced capstan belt and now the reverse play doesn't work. I guess I didn't align the belt around the wheels the right way. I have a sony cassette deck tc-we605s. Do you have an image of how...

You do not need any special instructions- look at the flywheels when they are running- they are hooked to the capstan shafts. The capstan shaft have to go in opposite directions for auto reverse so just threat the belt to that this happens- the unit should then work.
You can get a Service manual from Hi Fi Engine maybe

My Nakamishi Cassette Deck 2 is eating tape. It switches off when it does, but how can I fix this? From the look of it this cassette deck has the same cassette drive as the DR-8. Is that correct?

It could be the take up spindle does not have enough torque causing the tape to bunch up after the capstan. If you open up the unit you will notice ether belts or rollers for the tape drive. If it has belts you can replace the belt after cleaning the pulleys. If it has rollers you may be able to clean them with a rubber cleaner (not alcohol which will dry the rubber and cause glazing). Make sure the capstan and the pinch roller is clean using a rubber revitalizing cleaner on the pinch roller. "Goof off" from a hardware store is great for the capstan if it has a lot of metal oxide on it.

It might be a model that has a special IC that allows the door to open and close.

You'll need to take the case off.

try hifiengine.com...that site may have the service manual.

Motor plays at a very slow speed

capstan belt may be failing. check this by removing lid and touch the capstan flywheel when running. if it is easily stalled/slow to come up to speed and or the belt slipping badly then belt will require replacement.
