Would this be a good mic for a group of four singers. does it have to have phantom power

It would be a good mic for that. It does require phantom power, like alomst all condenser mics.

That will not work. The Beta 87H/C already has a preamp built into it. That preamp requires phantom power. The MX1BP is another preamp, so you would not need it, due to the preamp that is built in.

If you do not have phantom power available, then purchase an external phantom power supply.

Does an MXL 990 microphone only work with an inbox?


By "inbox" do you mean a transformer that powers it?
Condenser mics need 48 volts (phantom power) to run, so you normally switch the phantom power button on for the channel you have the condensor mic. plugged into.

Since you did NOT give us the model number of the Behringer mic, we can't do much to help... HOWEVER many of the mics are "condenser" mics that REQUIRE "Phantom" power from a mixer or preamp. These will NOT work without the phantom power being supplied. Look up your model number and see if it might be a condenser type.

If it is a condensor mic, it will need phantom power, some mixing desks have specific inputs that have phantom power and there is usually a switch to press. Also some mics use a battery instead of using the phantom power on the mixing des.

There is really no way for a condenser mic to damage the board UNLESS you break the ground and get a static discharge into the input. That can happen with any microphone and has NOTHING to do with the phantom being on or off. As phantom power goes on and off slight bias at the input preamps can make amps non-linear causing the raspy sound you heard. The Phantom LED means NOTHING as it shows the state of the phantom switch by connecting a 12 volt source through a resistor to the LED... It shows NOTHING regarding the state of the 48 volt supply. Each input circuit has two 6.8Kohm resistors to the swinger of the phantom switch 2nd pole that either grounds those or connects them to a filtered 48 volt source. As long as you don't have a static buildup there is NO need to turn phantom power on or off while connecting a condenser microphone. At each input when using the XLR jacks are two per side 470pf capacitors for RF bypass. For the XLR's there is a 10Kohm between the signal lines and two series 10mfd/50 volt caps in series of each input to block the DC, when using phantom power, from reaching the preamp stage. These caps have to charge and discharge when changing the state of phantom power so you should AVOID having the main amps being driven while changing the state of any phantom power. Always have the fader(s) down and any monitors down to avoid a thump and also the non-linear raspy transition as the input caps charge/discharge. So fix the microphone... don't know what type you have, but DO check the cable (first) as ALL three conductors MUST be good for a condenser mic to work on phantom power. A ground leakage or noisy connection will cause your symptoms. Use a SHORT known good cable right at the board to test the mic. The 48 volts is applied through the two 6.8K resistors between both the signal lines to the shield of your XLR cable. The microphone picks off the 48 volts with a similar circuit.
Now let's cover a very important thing regarding system safety: ALL, and I do mean ALL interconnected equipment MUST be powered from the same source. Professionals run a power cord back to their mixer right alongside the snake. This is to avoid ground bounce damage due to bad building grounds or ground faults.

microphones broadly fall into 2 distinct types
  1. Condenser - requires a power source either a battery inside the microphone itself or remote 'phantom power' usually provided from a p.a. mixer.
  2. Dynamic - do not require a power source. Most famous of all is the Shure SM57 (instrument / vocals) and SM58 (lead vocals) used by many musicians and singers around the world.
Condenser microphones are used extensively in recording studios because they are very sensitive and have a better range than dynamic mics. However they are a bit fragile and good ones are expensive. There are plenty of cheap condenser microphones about but they give a rather tinny sound.
If you want the microphones for general band work, especially gigging you will get better value for money with dynamic microphones. These are much less sensitive that condenser mics and are intended for close up work - no more than a few inches from the mouth of the singer (use a pop shield to prevent unwanted noises) or hung close in to an instrument.
There are also 3 different pick-up patterns for microphones. Which ones you go for will depend on the use for which they are intended.
  1. Cardoid - cone shaped directional pick up pattern. These will only pick up sound from in front of the microphone in a cone shape of about 60 degrees. Suitable for general vocals and instruments. Good resistance to feedback. To effectively mic-up a big instrument like a piano you may need to use more than one mic.
  2. Hyper Cardoid - as above but with a much narrower pic-up sone - a cone of about 30 degrees. These are very good for lead vocals as you can drive them a bit harder without risk of feedback or picking up other instrument sounds on the stage (particularly useful if you have a singer who plays an a loud acoustic instrument or a keyboard with built in speakers). THese are okay for using to mike-up an instrument where the sound comes from a small fixed point (saxophone, violin, trumpet, acoustic guitar - provided that the musician stands still) but not much good for larger instruments like pianos or harps. They are also good for mike-ing guitar amps, but only if they don't have a separate tweeter.
  3. Omni-Directional . These will pick up sound from all around. Whilst they can be good for picking up large acoustic instruments or choirs they are very prone to feedback and are not really suitable for public address purposes.
Don't be tempted to buy cheap microphones with permanently fitted cables, especially ones with a standard 6mm jack-plug. Always go for mikes with a balanced (3 pin xlr) cable as they do not pick up as much radio interference on the cable (but only provided your mixer/amp also has balanced inputs too).
Although many professionals swear by the Shure SM57 and SM58 mics mentioned above I personally prefer the AKG D55 a hyper-cardoid which has a longer pick-up range and higher output than the Shures (useful if musicians or singers hang back a bit from the mic) and usually slightly cheaper too. It is really good for lead vocals but makes a good instrument mic too with a nice crisp but warm sound across the frequency range.
For larger instruments, or two backing singers sharing a mike, I use the standard cardoid version of the same AKG (but I'm afraid I can't remember the model number now).
If you want to mike up drums that is another subject all together.

for purposes of recording quality, I would recomend getting and external sound card. M-audio make a good range. You would need to have a +48v phantom power supply for this unit to work. The sound card you buy should have this. A Pc or laptop won't

Condenser microphones need phantom power (48V) to operate. Some condenser mics use batteries to work and get around using phantom power from an audio mixer. hope this helps

These are a condenser mic which requires a very high impedance FET amplifier right near the condenser part. Most wired condenser mics use Phantom powering of the internal amplifier AND balanced line driver.

I would NOT recommend you try modify this unit for wired operation.

Incidently Phantom powering is usually at least 9 volts.

My microphone doesn't do it right.


Some of the Podcast mics are condenser mics and MUST be used with a preamp or DEVICE that supplies PHANTOM power to the mic.

You computer DOESN"T supply Phantom power.

Read up on Phantom power in Google to understand it.

I have a shure microflex mic condencer 150 the led does not work and the mic is dead. Does the mic need a battery if so how do you instal it.


Try using a mixing console with phantom power ( + 48 ). A condenser mic needs 48 volts to operate. The led should light when the XLR microphone cable is connected to a console with phantom power.
