It's a discontinued model. You can download the manual from this web page:

http://www8.garmin.com/support/userManual.jsp?market=3&subcategory=40&product=010-00146-00

I have one of these units from over 10 years ago and they do take a bit of time to get a fix from the satellites but work well when it does. They don't like trying to start up when on the move so better to let it find its current position and then set off.

Still works well despite its age.

When I am in heavy timber and not moving at a good pace my compass points in the opposite direction it is supposed to. What am I doing wrong? When I walk down the road it works perfectly.

The Garmin 12 GPS loses sattelite reception in heavy woods and that's why it doesn't work properly. It's not a fault and you're not doing anything wrong. All Garmin 12s are the same.

Garmin gps 12 loss of data

I had the same thing happen. The problem is that the internal lithium battery is shot. Solution: phone Garmin at 1-800-800-1020 x 2,2,1. You send the receiver in along with a $42.41 check. They will probably replace the unit. They will explain exact procedures when you call.
Hope this helps.

My garmin GPS 12 will not pick up and lock on the satilites

Go to the Garmin website and download up to date software for your unit. A new satellite launched in '08 caused some problems, and the update fixes this.
Please come back and let us know if this fixes it.

COM 1 to garmin 12 problems

I had a similar problem with another garmin model. Problem cropped up after some sync software for an mp3 player1.gif was installed in my PC1.gif.

To get the software1.gif to recognise my GPS I had to go into my PC's task manager. (ctrl alt del). Click on the processes tab and look for a program called "wces.exe". Ending that process would allow the PC to recognise the GPS. Be careful, ending the wrong process can screw up your PC.

I know this solution1.gif is a longshot, please don't give a bad rating! :)

good luck
