Question about Cobra 29 LTD CB Radio

2 Answers

SWR meter will not go to cal line.

When ever you lower the wattage on the 29 LTD and other Cobras, you lose the ability to use the swr cal function. Now, there has to be a pot, L number, or VR that you can use to raise the reading back to the cal point. Every possible combination of words I can think of to try and find this solution in a manual, I've just about exhausted. You can find manuals on line to adjust everything else except the meters for this radio.. They have to have adjustments to set them up so where are they?

If you have a swing mod, forget the meter in the radio. Buy an external meter. they are more accurate any way.

How do you set the SWR on a cobra 29 LTD classic radio

the same way you set it on any other radio.Look at the face of the set,you will see a switch that says S/RF,CAL , SWR. Now look at your meter and you will see a triangle that shows cal.Put your set on ch 1 with the switch in the cal position and bring the needle to that calibrate line on the meter by keying the mic. now release the key and set switch to SWR and key the mic again. Now write this reading down.Repeat for channels 40 and 19. If the reading is higher on 40 than on 1 you need to shorten the ANTENNA.If its higher on 1 than 40 you need to make your ANTENNA longer Always check 19 to make sure you have an average SWR. Any reading under 1.9:1 is good

My ANT light comes on when ever i push the mic button but my SWR isnt that high

The meter will be more accurate and an external meter will be even better. If they show good disregard the ant light it is adjustable. It may have been set to sensitive from factory. These erroneous SWR reading can be the side effects of a PEAK & TUNE if the coils have been spread but that should also show on meter.
SWR meter calibrations
  • Switch (S/RF SWR CAL) to the CAL position.
  • Push and hold mic button
  • While holding mic button adjust the SWR CAL knob so the meter needle swings to the CAL mark on the meter
  • While still holding down the mic button, set the (S/RF SWR CAL) switch to the SWR position, to read the SWR reading. Note: When switched to SWR position the meter needle should ideally be as far to the left as possible. Anything over 3 is not acceptable.

I have a Cobra CB Radio and was wondering if I have it on SRF or SWR or CAL

S/RF/SWR/CAL SWITCH. When in the S/RF position, the meter swings
proportionally to the strength of the received signal. When transmitting,
the meter indicates relative RF output power.
When in the "CAL" position, the SWR meter can be calibrated by adjust-
ing the "SWR CAL" control to the "CAL" mark on the meter face.
When in the "SWR" position, the standing wave ratio is measured.

You will want to operate on S/RF position.

Im tying tom calibrate my cobr 29 nw ltd with firestik 2 antenas im putting the cal button and keying mic and making the neddle go to the left side of the metter where the number 3 is at because if put on...

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're doing, but I can tell you how to do
an SWR calibration. You have a three-way switch on the left next to the meter.
From top to bottom they are: s/rf (signal/radio frequency), swr, and cal (calibrate).
Put the switch in the "cal" position. Key the mic and hold it. Turn the SWR calibration
knob one way or the other until it lines up with the triangular mark in the upper
right corner of the meter. Then put the switch in the middle (swr) position and key
the mic again. It will give you a reading on the swr band on the meter. The lower the
better: 1:1 is perfect, 1:2 is OK at best. Any higher (especially over 3:1), and you have a
problem that can't be fixed by tuning. You have a bad antenna, a bad coax or a
mismatched pair of antennae if you're running co-phase.Hope this helps.

Swr meter not moving

follow these steps to adjust the
standing wave ratio(SWR).
1. Turn on the CB.
2. Set S/RF/SWR/CAL to CAL.
3. Key the Mic and rotate SWR CAL so the meter points
to CAL.
4. Unkey Mic.
5. Set S/RF/SWR/CAL to SWR.
6. Key Mic again and note the actual measurement on
the SWR scale. Refer to the following table to interpret
the reading.

1:1 - 1.5 Great
1.5 - 2:1 OK
2:1 - 3:1 Not So Good
Higher than 3.1:1 Terrible

I have weak talk back signal

Did you tune the antenna??

The antenna needs to be tuned for best SWR.

If the antenna is not the right length, then you will get signal reflecting back into the radio. this is bad and it can damage a radio.

The 29 has a built in SWR meter.

The lower the SWR the better.

Here is how to check the swr.

Turn to ch 20. Put the sf swr cap switch to CAL. Key the radio. With the radio keyed, turn the cal knob up until the meter is all the way to the right on the cal mark. with the radio still keyed, flip the switch to SWR. Where ever the needle falls is your swr reading. The top line is SWR. If it is above 3 this is really bad, and your antenna is no tuned and you are hurting your radio. You need to adjust the antenna length.

Turn to ch 1 and take an SWR reading the way I explained. Then do the same on ch 40. IF the SWR is lower on ch 1 then 40, your antenna is too short, make it longer. The antenna has a way of adjusting it. Usually the whip slides up or down in a colar.

If the swr is higher on ch 40 then 1, it is too long, and you need to make it shorter.

Keep making adjustments until the reading on 1 and 40 get lower, and are about the same.

Then check ch 20 again. It should be low, 1.5 or under. Then you are good to go.

you will find people hear you a lot better, way better then ever.

How to set SWR readings to my K40 Antenna without a meter

If you have a cobra 29 then you have a meter. There is no way to Tune an antenna without a meter. You need a device that can read the reflect, or Standing Wave Ratio. That is a standing wave of RF energy that instead of leaving the antenna, is going back down the feed line to the radio and in time hurting the radio.

If you have a cobra 29 LTD, it has a build in SWR meter. It is not as accurate as an in line meter, but it will get it close enough not to hurt the radio. Here is how to do it.

Turn on the radio, with the antenna hooked up. Never key with out an antenna hooked up.

Set the switch all the way to the left(S/RF SWR CAL) to CAL. this stands for calibrate.

You will notice there is a knob right next to the channel selector knob marked SWR CAL as well. Start with the knob turned all the way to the left.

Put the radio on Channel 20. This is just about the middle of the band.

Key the radio and hold it. While holding the key on the mic, turn the SWR CAL knob up until the needle on the meter hits the mark "CAL". there is a triangle, and a gap in the line. The needle needs to be at the point of the triangle in the gap.

NOW, while still holding the mic key, flip the switch from CAL to SWR. You should see the needle immediately swing back. What ever the needle is on at this point is your SWR reading. use the set of numbers on the top of the meter, that's for SWR measurement.

If the needle does not swing back, and is in the rad, the antenna is WAY off. There are some reference points on the scale. The first gap in the line is 1.5 SWR. if the needle is there or less that is fine. then you have 2 and 3. 2 is not so great, but not extremely bad, but you should try to get it lower. 3 is really bad. Anything past 3 is considered infinity, and is really really bad.

If its high, then your antenna is either too long or too short. So how do you know which?

Here is how.

Turn to channel one and repeat the SWR process from above. Make note of the reading.

Then turn it to channel 40. Repeat the process again and take note of the reading.

Now, if the SWR is higher on channel 40 then 1, then your antenna is too long and you must shorten it. If the reading is higher on 1 then 40, then your antenna is too short, and you must lengthen it.

Make adjustments in length about an 1/8th inch at a time until you have either the same reading on 1 and 40 or real close, and or the reading on channel 20 is really low.

If you get it so that the reading on 1 and 40 are the same, then the SWR reading on 20 will most likely be almost nothing, unless there is either something wrong with the antenna, coax, or its just a crappy antenna.

K40 should be able to get a nice low SWR.

Dont know how to use the swr meter on my radio

With radio turned on

1. Switch the first switch (S/RF SWR CAL) to CAL setting
2. Key mic up &
3. Turn SWR CAL knob while still keying mic until the needle is on the red CAL arrow at the far end of the meter scale. Unkey mic.
4. Switch the first switch back to SWR setting.
5. Key mic up again and record SWR reading and adjust as needed.
6. When done adjusting put switch back in the S/RF setting for normal operation.

Do not flip the switch with the mic keyed up.

Swr meter not moving.

If the radio is working don't worry about the meter unless you absolutely want it. These little meters are not very accurate or reliable. Get an external SWR meter to check the antenna.
