I've had the same thing happen. For some reason the drive isn't being read in windows explorer, but when i go to my device manager under disk drives it says it still sees that there is a drive. It won't give it a letter designation though (like C:, E:, etc.). I read elsewhere that it might be a partition fault. Anyone know if i can recover my info?

    I have a HP Pavilion Dv5 Notebook Intel 2 Duo CPU P8600 2.4g x 4g Ram
Running Windows Vista Home Premium with service pack 1.
I purchased a WD Elements 320g external hard drive first off it didnt work I was going to take it in to get fixed when it decided to work all of a sudden.
Then I hadn't used it for 2 weeks or so whent to connect and it wouldn't work, I the took my laptop home as i use it at work, got home and thought I would try it again, It worked ? I then procceded to transfer files from my laptop to my hard drive and then after a couple of minuets it stopped working & I haven't been able to get it going since. Could you please help.

If it connected to a usb port it could take some time to read unit. alternatively connect to another port and reboot the computer.

One bad lead can cause a computer to continue on a cycle or to shutdown or fail to detect your hard drive

Test all leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions,IDE,SATA

the leads from your motherboard to your hard drive make sure they have a secure connection and are not faulty or just replace them there probably old and faulty
make sure all leads that are attached to your drives dvd\cd 3 1/2 inch floppy have secure connections and are not faulty even the electic extensions or just replace them they are probably old and faulty a computer needs its connections to have an end so any faulty leads will end up with a computer error

hope this helps

When I connect it to my laptop (or ANY other computer/laptop) the blue light on the external hardrive turns on and I can feel that it is working, but it simply doesnt get read, the computers dont recognise...

Open the enclosure.
Separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter.
Connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, and see if you can read the files.

If not, search online for a professional 'data recovery service' -- for a FEE, they can repair a disk-drive just long-enough to copy your files onto a new disk-drive.

Drive not working/ not showing on desktop/ green light showing on powerpack but light blinking amber / yellow on the hard drive

Do you hear a clicking sound while the HD (hard drive) is ON? If not, here's what you need to do:

1. Try to connect the HD into different USB ports of your computer. Or might as well, try different computer.

2. If you're using USB cable to connect the HD to the computer, try different cable. If it has a FireWire connection, then try FireWire.

3. If same problem occur, check the Disk Management of your computer while the HD is connected. To check the Disk Management, here's how:

- Right click "My Computer" (for XP) or right-click the "Computer" icon (for Vista or Win 7).
- Go to"Manage", then select "Disk Management".
- List down all the drive letters that you will see. Include the "Unallocated" disk space on the list(if there is), then unplug the HD from the computer.

* If there's a drive letter that disappears, then it's your HD. You may reconnect the HD to the computer > right-click on the HD's drive letter > change drive letter. Try to set the drive letter of the HD in drive X: or V:.

* If the drive letters remained the same, though you disconnect your HD, then, it means that the HD is no longer detected by the computer.

* If the HD appears to be "unallocated", then you need to reformat it.

*** However, if you're hearing a clicking sound, I'm sorry to inform you that the HD is no longer working. That clicking sound is also called the "click of death".

Thank you and good luck!

Hi. I connected my western digital HD to a DVD Player. It worked fine in the DVD player and still does but it does not work in a computer anymore. When you connect it up to a computer it seems to struggle...

I would assume the dvd player encrypted the drive so you could not copy the movies from your dvd player to your computer, so you could not burn them to prevent piracy. If you wanted to use the hard drive in your computer you will need to format the drive.

I connect my hard drive with another computer when other computer is running when i connect with them one ic is burn on ciricut board and get burn smell from hard drive. Plz help me in this regards.

if you plugged or unplugged a HD to a computer when the computer is running, you have quite probably fried the HD *unless it's an EXTERNAL HD with a USB connection, which could be more resistant to this type of abuse).
I suggest you download SeaTools from Seagate and check the HD, but I think it;s pretty sure to say that it's gone

Cannot get external hard drive to work

- Make sure that the hard drive (HD) is properly connected to the computer.

- Try connecting it to a different computer to make sure that the HD is the problem.

- Check the Disk Management in your computer to see if the HD could still be detected. Once detected, reformat the HD and it should work again.

To check the Disk Management:

NOTE: Make sure that the external HD is connected and turned ON.

1. Right-click "My Computer" (XP) or "Computer" icon (Vista)
2. Select Manage and click on "Disk Management".
3. From the Disk Management, you will see a drive letters
4. Write down all the drive letters and then disconnect the Maxtor HD from the computer.
5. If there's a drive letter that disappears, then that is your Maxtor HD.
6. Reconnect the Maxtor HD and reformat it. You may right-click the drive letter and there's an option to format the HD.

If you're hearing a clicking sound while the HD is turned on, mostly, it's already defective.

Have a great day!

WESTERN DIGITAL EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE

My hard drive was dead and wasn't recognized by the computer, it didn't even start, just a few clicking noises, which according to some of the experiences is the same as a DEAD Hardisk. Anyways, as I read that sometimes this happens as a result of a hit, well, I wacked my HD as a last hope for it to recover its "memory" (as in the movies) and believe me or not, it worked! I don't know if this might help yours, but it saved mine!
The way I did it was like this: I started the pc and when the HD started to run and I heard a couple of clicks, I hit it against the table while in vertical position (assuming that the arm of the HD might slightly move better that way) one time, and then when the spinning and the first click was heard agin I hit again. After that I heard the typical searching sound of a HD, and you can imagine I started to pray that what I heard wasn't my anxiety sound (if it has any). Now I am a firm believer in the old trick of whacking the old TV to get the vital signal back!
Good luck to you too!
