Question about Heating & Cooling

I am installing a new thermostat and there are 3 wires to connect. 1 red, 1 green, and 1 white. Where do they go. Should I assume red to R or RC, green to G, and white to W? Thanks

More than likely, this is what you have:

Red- Power- (RC/RH)
White- Heat- (W)
Green- Fan- (G)
Blue- Cool- (Y)

Usually, the only times you need more than 4 wires are:

1. You have a HeatPump system.
2. Your new digital thermostat does not use batteries, which then you have to have a common wire to power the thermostat.

Wiring color to Thermostat Depending on what thermostat youhave and existing wires. Typically red and white are for heat and yellow andgreen are for cooling. On base of thermostat there should be initials stampedto identify wires by color. R. W. Y. G. Possible Rc. and Rh if so for most usesyou need to jumper these two together. You may have a blue wire instead ofyellow or green. If so just hook blue to y or g. Hope this helps you. Thanks.

Typical Thermostat Wiring for 4 or 5 wire Heat/Cool Thermostat (not heat pumps)
4 Wire Termostat
R = Red One Side of 24 volt Transformer
G = Green Blower
Y = Yellow Cool
W = White Heat
5 Wire Thermostat
with one transformer for both units
Rc One Side of 24 volt Transformer
Rh Jumper Rc to Rh
G = Green Blower
Y = Yellow Cool
W = White Heat
5 Wire Thermostat
With 2 transformers one for indoor unit
And one for outdoor unit
Rc = Red One Side of (outside) 24 volt (outside transformer)
G = Green Blower (outside transformer)

I have a travel trailer with a roof top a/c colman mach111 and I hooked up a thermostate digital. The heat works but cant get a/c to come on. the termanials on hunter thermostate are G W Y RC RH


OK, the wiring that you should have in your RV is as follows: Red White Blue Yellow Green Gray.

This Thermostat will not work on this Air conditioner because the tstat you are installing is a 24V thermostat. The connections are as follows G = Fan, W = White, Y = Cooling, RC = 24V Cool, RH = 24V. The only thing that I can think to do is hook it up like so.

On the G Terminal, Hook up the Green wire from the wall. On W, hook up the White wire, Y, hook up the yellow wire. RC = run a jumper from the RH terminal, RH = hook up the red wire. If this doesn't work then you will have to go back with the coleman thermostat.

A duo therm thermostat (p/n 3105058) was removed because it would not operate the air conditioner/heater in a firan fireside camper. it was knocked loose from the wall damaging it.the thermostat is for use...


a. Remove the cover of the thermostat.
b. Connect the RED wire from the air conditioner
to the “RC” terminal on the thermostat.
c. Connect the “YELLOW” wire from the air conditioner
to the “Y” terminal on the thermostat.
d. Connect the “BLUE” wire from the air conditioner
to the “H” terminal on the thermostat.
e. Connect the “ORANGE” wire from the air conditioner
to the “G” terminal on the thermostat.
f. Push the thermostat wires into hole in wall and
fill excess hole with insulation.
g. Mount thermostat base to the wall with screws
provided.
h. Check all thermostat wires on base to ensure
they are completely clear of the bimetal coil of
the thermostat. Adjust if necessary.
i. Replace thermostat cover.
If nothing operates on the air conditioner, remove the
return air grille assembly and verify the red, orange, yellow
and blue wires are properly connected (red-to-red,
orange-to-orange, etc.).
Next, disconnect the red wires and check for 12 volt
DC between the red wire from roof section and the orange
or blue wire from roof section. If no voltage received,
refer to Section F2. If voltage is received, the
problem lies with the thermostat or thermostat wires.
Next, disconnect all 4 wires (red, orange, yellow and
blue) from the thermostat. With the thermostat set on
COOL mode, FAN mode set on AUTO and HIGH, and
temperature selector set lower than the room temperature. Check for continuity between terminal RC (red wire)
and terminal G (orange wire); and RC (red wire) and
terminal H (blue wire). If continuity is achieved on each,
proceed with the next step.
Set fan switch to LOW. Continuity should NOT be present
between terminal RC and Terminal H, but present between
the other terminals (Y & G) and terminal RC.
If all of the previous checks are good, the thermostat is
good, do not replace it. If any one of the previous checks
are not correct, replace the thermostat.

Outside a/c unit hasnt powered on yet and I want to make sure my RH and RC wires are correct.


Connect the red to RH

Go down to the furnace and look at the circuit board and note what color's go where. Most units only use 4 wires.

Should be
RED to RH
YELLOW to Y
WHITE to W
GREEN to G

Then from there two wires go to condenser outside. And they connect to Y and C on the board. Most of the time Red and White from outside. Don't get confused with Red coming from thermostat. Let me know Ken

Thermostat wiring


your best bet and where i would start is to identify where the coulors are conected at the fernace. in the industry we use standard wireing coulors wher green is g for fan and red is rh=switched trans power for heating . rc=switched transformer power for cooling . now normaly there is only one transormer so you would put a jumper from rc to rh and conect the red wire from the furnace to eather of these.jumper installed. the y is your cooling witch is normaly the yellow wire. o on the stat is for a heat pump if you nead to energize reversing valve in cooling mode . w is first stage heating and this can be conected to eather brown or white youll have to check at the furnace to see witch it is . the final wire eather brown or white should be conected to c or 24v common witch you didnt say you see on the thermostat. once again
red to rc and rh
green to g
yellow to y
brown or white to w
brown or white to common or c

Changing thermostat matching wires trouble


Brown my friend is for the 4 way valve solenoid, that is if you have a heat pump, ( it uses freon for heating instead of natural gas) perhaps you got the wrong thermostat, if you have a brown you need a thermostat for a heat pump, a regular thermostat is not going to have a brown connection.
