Power supply/convergence issue...

I have a Panasonic Proj. TV, PT4743G which I bought about 54 years ago. Based on what I've been reading on this site, I thought I had a convergence problem (red won't line up) and now I'm getting some bowing effect. Authorized Panasonic dealers took TV today and did full diagnostic test. Said it's a power supply problem which is causing the convergence problem. Power supply would cost $500 - $550 (includes labor) and the convergence just needs an overhaul after that. 1 year warranty on part and 90 day on labor. They claim that all should be good after the power supply fix and the overhaul on the convergence. Does this sound right (ie. price and power supply issue). I need to get back to them to authorize the repair or say forget it and count my losses!! What's going on with these new tv's??? I have the old ****tube from 20 years ago that still works!!

Re: Power supply/convergence issue...

It is indeed a power supply problem and if bowing is also present the flyback transformer is also shot Repairs for these items would be about $280-300 for parts + labour

Re: Power supply/convergence issue...

Your Projo is a complicated piece of equipment, involving 3 picture tubes (like 3 tv's), convergence failures are extremely common, I dont think $550 is totally unreasonable, but I dont think it is a power supply issue if it is just effecting 1 color, usually it would cost around $100 parts $300 labor to repair, might be a little high, I suppose they are also charging you for pickup and delivery, I hate taking sets into office as that sometimes jars stuff loose or cracks boards.

yes and also possibly the low ohm resistors. You can get the PT53WX53 convergence kit which fits your model from which has the 2 ICs and associated resistors plus the CD with repair instructions.

We have a Panasonic PT4743G television that will not turn on. The red power light is blinking 5x and then pausing. What is the problem?

Projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both. Repair kits with instructions are also avail from

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Decoding the number of beeps may be possible with the owner's guide but this type of problem is normally due to a failed power supply.
These are often mounted on separate boards located in the bottom of your set and can be identified by the much larger parts you see on the board and possibly its relationship to the AC cord coming in. While these can be repaired, the cost of that will approach the cost of a new assembly.
Unfortunately, modern, more energy-efficient power supplies have some critical components that if bought cheap, don't last very long and frankly, 5 years isn't bad, I read of many dead within the first year.

Is the power indicator flashing three times? If so the Ics have shorted shutting the set down. You will need two STK392-110 convergence ICs. You can get replacement ICs at the following link with free installation instructions.

Zenith iqc50h95 50 in rear proj

Rainman, can`t really be of any great help on this one, both techs can be right, the chirp is exactly as you thought, the set is trying to come on but there is a short in the set and it`s shutting down because of the short, could be convergence, low voltage power supply, high voltage power supply, until a tech gets in there and starts un-loading circuits it`s impossible to say where the short is, gonna have to call someone out for this one, good luck with it, BMW Rider

Red convergence way off

I had the same issue as you pretty much exactly and so do others right around this last few weeks so I am thinking that this is a common problem with the product itself.

You can fix this pretty quickly with the link below. I bought it and it resolved the issue.

Toshiba model 61HX70 convergence issue

It is a good possibility you damaged something on that PCB that had the IC's, I like to use an upgraded chip the STK394-160e that is designed for HD signal stresses. I dont know why they ordered the convergence board but I suspect it would have been ok, there are also 2 jumpers that need soldering JW10 and JW50 that supply power to the chips and they REQUIRE resoldering or it will fail again. Might try reseating the RED CRT board, check for cables that you may have unhooked to see if they are not seated in their sockets properly, double check every wire you unhooked, Make sure you used a Silicone Heatsink Compound on to the back of the IC's. I dont know what all you unhooked, but check the wires going between the CRT Boards. Check for cracks in the boards to make sure they werent flexed to much. Good Luck.
