Ibm thinkpad r40 windows xp-pro after formatting and re-installing the system, all updates and SPs downloaded and installed, the wireless "disappeared"! the radio led wouldn't lit, in the connection list there is no wlan! just the lan appears. HEEEELP!!

Thanks and sorry for the delay.

Did it, but Start is not available. Only Stop and Restart.

Pressed Stop (Start appeared) and then Start. No news. Situation the same: no wireless icon in the Notification bar, no light in the radio notification LED, no wireless adapter under the Network Adapters (only the LAN is there).

By the way, unscrewed the cover on the bottom of the computer and verified that the wireless card is there, connected (Intel something).

    Thanks again. Any other ideas?

If drivers installed device is looking for wifi manager which is the software package for wifi.
you can goto control panel open administrative tools select sevices and scroll to wireless zero config and press start.
this will then use windows settings.done

Go to www.lenovo.com and download ThinkVantage system update, Its a Program that installs all your laptop drivers and scans for the missing software and drivers. You will need Microsoft NETFRAME Work 2.0 installed for it to work. I have it on all my IBM ThinkPad laptops and it should work. After you install it go under START, Programs, ThinkVantage, System Update. and follow instructions. If it still doesn't detect it, your WiFi card maybe disconnected or bad. All IBM ThinkPad R40's come with a WiFi card built in.

SOURCE: Lost wireless - Ibm thinkpad r40

haha worrying isnt it...
after reinstallation of windows no drivers for blutooth , wireless quite often modem and same vga,
windows by default does not install because need specific software ...(drivers)
what you need to do is first of all find out what wifi it is ; like wlan400 e.g.
you then need to download and install the driver for it .as soon as the driver is present windows will detect and install device,
look in device manager for devices with no drivers intalled.
same precedure for each device.

SOURCE: thinkpad r40 - wireless disappeared

Go to the control panel, then System, then Hardware tab, then Device Manager. Then Network adapters - you should have two network adapters one LAN and one wireless.
If most likely have one, the LAN adapter and a yellow ? against a network adapter - this will be a wireless adapter (its not installed)

Check your BIOS and make sure the wireless card is enabled.
You need to download from the IBM/Lenove WEB site the wireless driver (there may be several types that is installed for your model laptop). Make sure you select the correct Windows version driver.
When you run the driver,it will uncompress and copy to your hard drive in C:\drivers. You can then install the driver from this directory. If it doesn't work then repeat with another driver, most likely one that works will be the Intel one.

How can i turn on wireless adapter on the IBM thinkpad R40 laptop.I can't see the wireless adapter switch.......the drivers are already installed successfully. Please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

the r40 has no hardware switch. it has a software switch. you must first determine what type of wifi card if any is installed. most of the stock cards are intel or cisco and the ibm support site has the software used to control them. sometimes, thru the network connections, windows can take control if the drivers are installed

I cant get a wireless connection on my IBM R40 using a Linksys G

I had the same problem with my R40 (2681) and a Linksys G router. The specs on IBM's/Lenovo's site indicate that the wireless card in the R40 only handles certain types of wireless encryption. The newer types (e.g. WPA) won't work on it and they are usually the standard on routers nowadays. My Linksys G router works fine with the R40 with WEP or with no encryption. Not ideal, but that's life with an old laptop.

I fromat IBM R40 nOTE BOOK NO "ETHERNET CONTROLLER"

You need to download the driver to another computer then transfer it to your ibm by cd or usb drive or even floppy.

After you have the eternet installed then I would visit the Windows Update site and run a custom update so that it will detect missing drivers and install them. It might not detect everything but that's a good place to start.

Let me know if you have any other questions or problems.

Best of luck!

No Sound On My IBM R40

What I ask myself is, If sound and wireless are not working - what else might not be ok until you find out later, when you have documents and applications installed?

I would reset the R40 to factory settings right away. Hopefully that person hasn't removed the hidden partition...
You can check that by going into your Device Manager (Right-click "My Computer->Manage->Disk Management) and see if you see a Fat32 partition usually called "ServiceV001".

Restart your notebook and hit the blue button at the ThinkPad splash screen. A wizzard will lead you through the process.

Rescue and recovery will restore your laptop to factory state. It has an image of their default installation with all the software, settings, and drivers.

After you're done, you have to update the drivers to the newest versions. Look in you start menu and you will see an entry called either "IBM" or "ThinkPad" with a sub-menu that contains the software to update your computer.

If you want to manually update your drivers, go here, fill out the form and follow the prompts. (You will find the necessary information on the sticker on the bottom of your laptop).
It will get you to the right page.

If you have any questions, come back here and leave a comment. I am happy to help!

Good luck!
