Acer 5740 model i3 processor
Charger = AC adapter
Charger connector = DC Power Jack. Abbreviated as DC_IN
Faulty parts on motherboard?
Power MOSFET's, and/or MLCC's, and/or SMD fuse.
Could also be bad SMD/SMT diodes.
Using the HP Pavilion dv6000, and Pavilion dv9000 series of Notebook PC's, as an example,
See the first photo? That '8-legged creature' is a Fairchild Semiconductor Industries - FDS6679 - Power MOSFET.
Those '8-legs' are J-leads.
The FDS6679 is obsolete, so we will use the cross-reference example - FSS6679AZ.
Observe the second photo down. Has the Alpha & Omega Semiconductor Limited - AO4407 - Power MOSFET in it.
Here we see it is obsolete also. Using one of the cross-reference examples,
By the way, did you notice that one FDS6679 is $1.01 USD?
The AO4407 substitute above is 78 Cents USD.
Looking back at the second photo again, with the AI4407 in it;
Look at the immediate bottom/right corner, or the Ai4407 circled in Yellow.
That is an MLCC. Multi-Layer Ceramic Capacitor
You will also see one to the immediate right.
Small rectangular object, with a dark wide band in the middle of it.
There's one above it, one above that one (Top), one to the right of the top one, and one to the right of it.
There are 4 smaller examples to the bottom/left corner of the AO4407.
Look to see if any are burned/blackened/blistered
You can use a low wattage soldering iron. You don't need a soldering station.
Capacitors that we use in computers, are rated in Microfarads.
I'm going to show examples of MLCC's, that are rated in capacitance at 4.7uF, and 16 Volts. (DC)
[They are also SMD/SMT
Surface Mount Device/Surface Mount Technology.

I just bought a msi p7n sli platinum. my board is better than yours hahaha, j/k, all playing aside, I have the same problem with the 8pin power connection. A power supply rated v2.2 has the proper 8 pin connection, but 2.1 or lower doesn't, regardless, plugging in two 4 atx pin connectors wont work because you'll be taking 4pins away from the main 24 pin plug (even though my manual says 20 pins will work, it doesnt, they lied!!!). However, when I put the normal configuration of 24 then the 4 in place of the 8, it works fine. The only thing i would worry about is overclocking, thats when you need to be careful with your voltages, etc. Also, I read somewhere that the 8 pin is actually 2 four pins, each 4 pin is for each side of the cpu...

This board uses typical INTEL styled pin header for front panel connections and is used on many major OEM boards. Here is the pin assignment:
Pin 1-3 HD LED (Red color in this particular board)
Pin 2-4 Power LED (Green)
Pin 5-7 RESET
Pin 6-8 Power ON/OFF
Note: Pin 10 is empty

1.Check the Electrolytic Capacitors on the motherboard. Specifically the one's around the processor. These are Voltage Regulators for the processor.
The processor must have DC voltage within a specific range. This zone, or range is very small. Too much voltage, the processor turns off, or won't start up. Too little voltage does the same.
This link will show what Electrolytic Capacitors look like, and what they look like when they are failing, or have failed,
Electrolytic Capacitors are the number one weakest link, of computer hardware failure.
For ease of explanation of construction of them, they look like little aluminum pop cans, they have a rubber seal at the bottom of them, and inside them they have Electrolytic paste.
When the capacitors start to fail, the paste inside develops a gas.
(Hydrogen gas) This gas expands, and pushes the against the seal. The seal's edge pushes out of the 'can', and paste starts to ooze out. So much paste loss, and the capacitor operates at a weakened state. Too much paste loss, and the capacitor fails.
Besides the motherboard capacitors failing, the next area to watch are the one's in the power supply. Power supply's have voltage rails inside. More specifically, they have a 3.3 volt rail, a 5 volt rail, and a 12 volt rail. Voltage may be thought of as the 'speed' of electricity. Amperage may be thought of as how much.
Volts times Amps = Watts.
If you have a power supply with weak, or failed capacitors, you won't be getting the full wattage your computer needs. Your motherboard power light will light up, other lights will light up, fans will spin, and the harddrive sounds like it's working.
ALL the lights use less than 1 Watt.
EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts.
The harddrive just sitting there spinning it's platters, uses about 3 to 5 Watts.
PROCESSORS use 55 to 125 Watts!!
So you see you can have lights lit, fans spinning, and the harddrive spinning, but when BIOS tries to turn the processor on, it can't!
