Question about Sylvania NB500SL9 Blu-Ray Player

Sylvania NB500SL9 Blu-ray Player shows no picture or sound.

I just hooked up my new Sylvania NB500SL9 Blu-ray Disc Player to my Samsung PN50A550S1F plasma TV. Connection seemed easy enough...just the HDMI cable and the power cord. But when I turn on the player and insert a disc (standard DVD disc 'cause I haven't bought a blu-ray disc yet), there is no picture and no sound. The TV continues playing, and the screen on the blu-ray player shows the counter moving as though the disc is playing but, again, there is no picture or sound other than the TV program). The Quick Start Guide that came with the player includes a step where I'm supposed to "Press (HDMI) to change the resolution of the video signal being output from HDMI OUT jack" at which time I'm supposed to be able tomake a selection from 480p to 1080p24, but when I press the HDMI button (on the remote) nothing appears on the screen of either the player or the TV. I'm 60 years old, have very little technical knowledge about these things, so any help you could give me in layman's terms would be appreciated. Thanks!

Nope. Same results as in my original submission. So I tried moving the HDMI cable from the TV to another port, then the TV wouldn't work (message on the screen said "check cable signal). When I returned it to it's original port, it (the TV) worked fine again, so I'm assuming that in the original set-up for the TV (I have Verizon Fios), that port #1 was dedicated to that device. The TV has only 3 HDMI ports...#1 & 2 are on the back, #3 is on the side. As I said, #1 appears dedicated to the TV, but the Blu-ray player will not work in any of the either ports. Symptoms are exactly the same as in my original description. Do I have to dedicate another HDMI port to the new device via a menu on the TV or something??? Thanks!

What a quick fix! Where the DVD set-up instructions were not clear, Fixya was able to offer a concise suggestion that got me up and running in no time!

Yes, here are the layman's terms:

OK...congrats for making it to 60, my mother is 84 and won't give up her webtv. Also congrats for refusing to let technolgy intimidate you.

1...you said: "there is no picture and no sound" My response: On your remote look for a button that says: "SOURCE" Press the source key (or button). Now cycle through your video inputs until you see the blue ray movie.

2...you said: "there is no picture or sound other than the TV program." My response: see #1.

3...you said: "The Quick Start Guide that came with the player includes a step where I'm supposed to "Press (HDMI) to change the resolution of the video signal being output from HDMI OUT jack" at which time I'm supposed to be able tomake a selection from 480p to 1080p24, but when I press the HDMI button (on the remote) nothing appears on the screen of either the player or the TV."

My response: ^disregard this for now.^

4...you should be able to do whatever you can do from the tv menu as u can do with the remote.

Thank you for using fixya.com Are there any other questions on this matter?

I believe GINKO stated this first, albeit with somewhat less detail.

GINKO said: "Try switching the TV input using the button on the TV remote untill you get picture from the DVD player displayed on TV."

    This is the solution.

It will not support the normal standard disc .only the blue ray disk r or the blue ray disc rw will be suppoeted.or to use the different disc the disc needs to be finalised to make it work on the player.

Try switching the TV input using the button on the TV remote untill you get picture from the DVD player displayed on TV.

Select a different HDMI input at the back of TV.

Always disconnect or connect HDMI cables with devices off.

Try this code-
This does work (most of the time) once you key in the code 1369 (4 xxxx's appear) wait till they disappear then press 0/10 key a zero will appear on screen you are now region free.

How to activate the multi-region functionality
1. Make sure the disc tray is open and remove any discs from the player.
2.Key in '1 3 6 9' using the remote control.
3. Select region 0 for a region-free setting.

Blu-ray require a higher speed when playing a disc so they can produce the hd picture, making the demands on the motor much greater.

I got a second samsung blu-ray player, having liked the first one so much. This new one has been just terrible. Presently neither the sound nor the picture will come on my Proview LCD tv, for some reason...

One thing you might want to try is hooking the player up with the Composite (yellow/white/red) output into the TV. If this gives you a picture, then try a different HDMI cable.

How can I get a Region 4 dvd to play on my blu-ray player?

After getting clarification from Fixya I can pass the links below to you to check yourself

Some players are harder than others to do this but you may want to
try here or here
Comments:
Toshiba's and JVC's are the harder ones to do

I use a Phillips myself as it is not only cheaper but has much more going for it than many of the higher end units. i throw anything at it and it just plays

The older the unit that harder it is to do the region free thing with.
I let my EX have the panasonic (big grin)

If you cant find a fix then look at the codes available for cheaper brands and how easy it is to do it before you purchase one.

Just a thought.

I just purchase a sylvania blu ray dvd player and the picture is great no sound

If you used an HDMI cable then no extra audio cable is needed, but if you hooked it up differently then you need the audio cable in order to get sound. Hope this helps.

I want change the region code 1 to all region

One european player is the Sigmatek sbr1000 and it seems to be also a clone of Funai. Which is what your sylvania basically is.
We can use any DVD or bluray by using this code with the remote : 973501, you have to use this code each time you turn off the power and change DVD region.
Insert your DVD, say wrong region, open, use remote for 973501 then close, it's done.
Please let me know if this is ok on the Magnavox.

BLue ray DVD player

I am not sure about the Sony BDP-S300 Blu-Ray Disc Player: But the Samsung BD-P1000 Blu-Ray Disc Player requires HDMI cable
to give the best resolution (1080p) possible that the TV set is able
to support. Hope this helps.
