Hi donrlynn

What happened to the old belt, did it get old and you just wanted to put a new one on or did it break while operating? If it broke during operation then it is possible that you have a pulley that is off of alignment and needs to be fixed first otherwise the belts will keep breaking. If that isn't the case then you should find one pulley that is the tensioner pulley on the bottom. This is easier if you have more help. You need to wind the belt as the diagram shows through every pulley except for the biggest one. Then you need to compress the tensioner pulley as much as you can and then gradually ease the belt around the biggest pulley. You can use a flat screwdriver or other similar tool to pry it over the lip of the pulley. Be careful, don't hurt yourself and let me know if you have anything further to ask about this.

Thank you for using Fixya and good luck

On the Front of the Deck where the Deck Hooks to the Front of the Mower Frame are 2 Adjusters. These Adjustments will Shift the Deck to the Rear and Tighten the Belt.

Sears Craftsman riding mower V belt getting chewed

I believe you may have the belt over one or more of the belt retainers next to the pulleys. They are 5 or 6 inches long and about a 1/4 inch in diameter. You have to loosen them when you put the belt on then adjust them to where they are just barely touching the back of the belt. They keep the belt from jumping off.

I need to replace a belt on a craftsman with a 42" deck.What size belt should I get.What length.

Craftsman is made by Murray Corp. who also makes Murry, YardMan, Lowes, Penncraft, and on and on. Go to your local Wal-Mart, Lawn and Garden Dept. and look for the belt that fits the Murray, YardMan, Lowes, Toro, 42" Deck 14-18 HP. Or take your old belt with you, and stretch them both end to end holding the end loops with each hand. Or you could go to Sears and just tell the parts department what your mower is and they can get you a Craftsman belt. It will be the same one you get at Lowe's, Wal-Mart, ect, probably just cost a little more. Sears doesn't make mowers, they just have their colors and names put on by the manufactorer. And Murray of Ohio is the maker of these.

How do I change out the primary belt on a Craftsman 17.5 hp 42" mower? The new belt is around the pulleys but it is very loose.

This belt is easist to install with the deck all the way down. Make sure there are no burrs on any of the pulleys, (will eat up your new belt in short order), also make sure that the 2 drive pulleys for the blades turn freely, (may have grass impacted around them, you may need to remove the 2 guards on top of the deck to clean, (if they do not spin eaisly). Triple check to make sure the belt is properly routed, one mistake and your belt is broken as soon as you engage. With the engine OFF, engage blades to check tension. If the belt is still loose, you likely have it routed incorrectly.
