A few different things could be going on here. Some things to check: possible vacuum leak, TPS (throttle position sensor), IAC (idle air control valve). I would check these first. Is the ck engine light on? If it is, take it to your local O'Rielly's or Auto Zone, they will scan it for free. Hope this helps, TJ

I have a 6200 Woods zero turn mower with a 20 hp Kohler Command. Runs anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes then shuts down. Put an electric fuel pump on it, no change. Good compression. Good spark.

Dear Doug,
There are three reasons you could get "run-on".
Probably you have one or both as your problem concerning the 5 - 20 minutes automatic shut off.
1) The timing is off, causing the engine to have a tiny bit of gasoline left over, which is just enough to give power to keep running.
2) The engine is getting too hot, which again causes it to keep on running after the key is shut off.
3) If the engine has a carburetor, the needle & seat could be dirty or sticking,or the float sticking, causing it too have too much gas, and that will keep it running.
God bless your efforts to fix this.

1968 mustang 302 standard 2 bbl carb will turn over and sound like it wants to stay running but will not.

Remove the air cleaner and carefully pour small amounts of gas down the carburetor. Have a fire extinguisher near by. If the motor keeps running then the engine is not getting fuel. Check the fuel pump & gas filter.

2003 Dodge Durango (5.9L V8) won't stay running unless you keep your foot on the gas.

Check temp sensor and TPS, throttle positioning sensor. The power control module,"pcm.is a possible thought.Just check all connections. It is always a good idea to spray WD 40 or equivalent in the connections.

I have a 97 dodge stratus. It won't start. Tried

Make sure it's getting fuel. Try using some ether or starting fluid. If it rumbles to life but doesn't stay running then there's a problem with the fuel delivery system. i.e.... Fuel pump, clogged filter, pressure regulator.... If the ether doesn't change the results you are getting now then it's a fire or sensor problem. Ignition coil, relays, sensors not signaling, PCM... I wish you luck. Let us know how it turns out

1986 Toyota p'up starts, but won't stay running once i left off gas pedal

first i would look for a vacuum leaks get it as close to idle as you can when cold and spray carb cleaner around and also check to see if the egr valve is stuck open this will act as a vacuum leak but not detect as one spraying carb cleaner around carb cleaner with change the engine speed near a vacuum leak

My '97 chevy s-10 won't start

Check to see if the fuel pump runs for a few seconds when you first turn the key to the "run" position. You should be able to hear it if you put your ear to the gas cap while someone turns the key. It will run for 3 or 4 seconds and then stop.
Check for spark. Easiest way it to hook a timing light to any wire and turn the engine over. There are many reasons for no spark. Most common being the coil, sensors, MAF etc.
If the fuel pump isn't running. Check fuses, wires, and finally... change the fuel pump if all else fails. You would be well advised to find one at an auto wrecker if you can. They are expensive.

2005 sedona won't start all of a sudden. Doesn't make a sound except for a tiny whirring sound like the feul injectors. Replaced starter...still won't start. checked all fuses...they are good....

you could just have dead cell in the battery which isn't getting enough amps to the starter,, have the battery LOAD checked,, that will tell you if the battery is actually good, just because it registers 12 volts isn't necessarily an indication that the required amps are present.

2002 jeep liberty turns over but will not crank. I hear the fuel pump at the gas tank but it still acts like it isn't getting any gas, I thought it was the gas because my husband's truck stopped...

Check for pressure at your fuel rail, If your fuel pump is working correctly you should be getting fuel spraying out of the rail when you press in on the needle valve (sometimes covered by a small cap)

This will let you know if your fuel pump is working, and at least if fuel is making it past your filter.

Will not start like there is no gas in but gas is in it

No gas isn't ther only reason a car won't start. Put a timing light on a spark plug and see if it flashes while cranking. It has to or you have no ignition. No other tool can produce this test.
