Most likely the motor. If you have a second set of hands, you can try and hand start it. Open the door, hold in the door switch (or tape it, if you don't have anyone to help), press the start button, and then grab one of the drum fins, and spin the drum counterclockwise and see if it takes off.

Dryer just stopped working

not much to go on here, but if you hear anything that sounds like a motor running, then I would suspect a broken belt. There is a belt that actually runs around the drum that makes it turn. If you don't hear a motor running then you need to check your controls and cable(with a volt meter(just start at the motor and work your way back). If you hear a motor then its probably the belt that gos around the drum and motor( a little tricky to replace but not hard)

Extreme rumbling, vibration have it apart whats the best way to tell if the drum is out of round or the rollers are shot have cleaned vent and motor. motor runs smoothly on its own

You rotate the drum rollers looking for an eliptical outer surface rubber of the rollers. Also make sure the rollers do not teeter fore and aft on the roller shaft.
Next grab the idler pulley for the belt and see if there is any play in the ldler.
Worn drum felts / gaskets or a front bearing glide can also contribute to the problem

See this link for parts:
http://www.appliancepartspros.com/partsearch/model.aspx?model_id=47834&diagram_id=28471897#d28471897

Item numbers you need to check are
6, (unusual wear)
14, drum gaskets {2 ea front and rear} (torn, worn or folded)
18. Just replace the belt if your into it this deep..... especially if the dryer is +5 years old
23, (roller Shaft for wear)
24, roller for wear center and outside surfaces
30. Drum glides (Kit)

A rumble is usually associated with a bad fan blade...as in the center of the fan blade hub is cracked or broken. Check the fan for play.. also hold the motor drive pulley and see if the fan rotates on the motor shaft. It should NOT rotate without turning the drive pulley
A squeal is associated with the belt or idler pulley
A thump is a drum/felt/roller/glide problem.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,

The dryer will not spin but you can still hear the motor running

There is a belt that goes around the dryer drum that is probably broken. Remove the top or back to access the motor area to inspect the belt.

I have a kenmore 27 inch electric dryer that when you push the start button it sounds like it starts but the drum doesn't turn. What could this be?

A clear indication that your dryer belt is broken is when the dryer drive motor runs but the drum does not rotate. A new belt is relatively inexpensive from several online or a local parts vendor, but installing it can be a bit frustrating since the dryer drum usually needs to be remove to install a replacement belt. Access to the interior of the dryer is usually necessary. For Maytag (and some Kenmore) models, the front of the dryer can be easily removed (two screws below front contour) by pulling out on the bottom of the panel and rotating up to release the top clips. Once off, place to the side, then remove four machine screws from the front drum/lint filter assembly, then remove by pullling out. Once off, place aside. Remove drum by lifting up and pulling out on drum (since the belt is broken it will not provide any resistance). Once removed, inspect the motor pulley arrangement noting the belt routing path around the motor pulley, belt tensioner, and the drum. Inspect the drum for belt wear marks, noting approximate location on drum where belt rides. Install replacement belt by routing through pulley arrangement (ridged side of belt rides againt motor pulley), then "hang" the belt on the interior backside to enable reaching the belt after reinstalling the drum. After placing the drum edge on the rear rollers, lift the front of the drum up into position, working the belt around the drum into the drum groove. Once the belt is in the groove, the drum should stay in position without lifting from the front. Check for proper pulley routing, taking care to avoid routing the belt OVER the tensioner belt keeper, i.e., route the the belt under the belt keeper to avoid belt riding on the keeper and failing prematurely. Install the front/lint filter assembly. As you manually rotate the drum, reach along the top and side of the drum and gently pull the belt out of the groove and into its normal ride position. Install the front panel, plug the unit in, start and check for proper rotation of the drum.

Drum does not turn

Hello,
Here are a few things to check. If you don't feel comfortable performing these check, please have a repair person come in and check it.

* Broken belt. Open dryer and see if belt is still wrapped around the drum. Pull on the belt to make sure it's not just hanging there. Inspect belt condition. Do not apply spray adhesive in this case: replace the belt. If belt is broken, look for contributing causes for failure such as worn drum rollers, damaged felt kit, or stiff idler roller.

* Motor burned out. Remove belt from motor pulley and start dryer. If motor runs but is noisy and motor is unable to turn the drum when the drum belt is threaded back on the motor pulley, then replace the motor.

* Thermal fuse is open. Run continuity test.

Hope this helps.

HOTPOINT DRYER VTD00G REPLACED BELT BUT WONT SPIN

Most likely to be a faulty start capacitor.
This a round plastic cylinder adjacent to the motor.
This gives the motor a kick start.

Dryer wont spen

The dryer only has the 1 belt that drives the drum. Shock Hazard Warning! Remove the dryer from its power source before accessing internal components.
Look for an obstruction in the blower which is attached to the front of the motor. Look for a foreign object stuck between the drum and bulkheads. Inspect for a broken belt. Inspect all drum rollers for free operation. Inspect idler pulley on rear of motor for free rotation with belt removed. Inspect drive pulley on rear of motor. All this can be done through the front of the dryer by removing the front panel enclosure.

Hope this helps!
