The timer you have has a bunch of small gears inside. The case is made of plastic. Yes the timer is most likely shot.To get the timer off you grab the black plastic rod in back out and this releases the knob. Then you can access the screws holding the timer on.

It's likely the safety switch in the lid which keeps the machine from spinning when the lid is up. If the switch is bad it sends a false signal that the lid is up.

OK, what you are experiencing is a timer mechanism fault. the timer motor is malfunctioning. anytime you have to manually advance the timer knob, this will signal a fault within the control mech. this is easily fixed by, replacing the timer control module. i will place a link to the actual part needed to fix this issue. you can also purchase this timer on line at this site if you wish.
