If this is the rear wheel there should be a long square key that fits into a slot in the axle shaft, which then drives the wheel.

SOURCE: craftsman 42" riding lawn mower blade free spinning but wont cut

It sounds to me that you need a new mower deck drive belt, or your blades need sharpening. If the blade edges are rounded, they won't cut butter... Also, when mower is off, check mower deck drive pulleys to make sure you don't have any that are locked up or are dragging. You can check this by pulling the belt away from pulley and spinning the pulley by hand. MOWER MUST BE OFF before attempting any of these checks. You would be surprised how many people would try this with the mower running.
Hope this helps

SOURCE: Blades won't spin on Craftsman II riding mower

get some one to sit on it and holding the brake try engaging the clutch...now with out getting to close laying down you can see if the linkage is working right....might just be a missed belt wheel.

SOURCE: Craftsman riding mower won't move.

yes it is a bad belt unless it is a hydro-stat(no clutch) you need to look under the mower and see if the belt is on correctly

SOURCE: My craftsman 15.5HP kohler riding mower turns over

Try cleaning or better yet, replacing the spark plug. Depending on age and how your tractor was maintained, there are other possible causes.

  • Gummed up fuel system
  • dirty fuel filter
  • defective or misaligned armature/magneto (part that causes your plug to spark, igniting the air/fuel mixture, thus starting the engine)
  • throttle linkage/cable problems
  • low oil level. Some Kohler engines use a low oil shut down sensor which won't allow the engine to run or start to avoid internal damage.
  • Mechanical engine problems
I hope you find this solution helpful. Please rate it thanks for using Fixya!

SOURCE: 18hp craftsman riding mower model#917.255913. won't turn left!

I have had this problem for the longest time. I replaced the secondary gear twice. Helped for a brief period and now won't turn left again. Replaced the steering shaft and worked for a brief period. Back to no left turns once again. The issue is with the secondary gear and bearings (plastic) which is only a temporary fix. What I had done was welded a piece of steel to the bottom of the steering shaft eliminating the secondary gear connecting directly to the tie rod for the steering. Works perfect now.

Check the steering rack cogs r
Are not missing each other as you turn the wheels left if the teeth gap increases as the wheels turn the rack is worn and will need adjusting so the teeth meat better or the rack will need to be replaced this . Part can be quite expensive I had a countax ride on same problem would not turn to the left easily or the steering wheel would just spin. Around but the front wheels did not move until you pushed them by hand 're engaging the cogs on the rack it was nearly £ 596+ vat just the parts needed to repair it

Craftsman M#917270810 riding mower starts and runs, but won't move in either direction, rolls freely.

Have you had either of the drive wheels off. If so you may be missing one of the axle keys.

Trans bad?

Jack up the rear end using the frame. Put a person or cinder block on the seat, and put it in drive. Look for the shafts turning inside the wheels indicating broken keyways.

Took off back tire to get it fixed (Flat) When I put it back on the tractor will not go in gear. Craftsman model number 917.273403

Are you sure that it is not going into gear? Could it be that the key did not get put back in place. The key is a little rectangular piece of metal that slides into a slot on the axle and inside the center of the wheel to keep the axle and wheel interlocked. Sometimes they slide out when putting the wheel back on.

I have a Craftsman mower 917.280810.It barely moves when clutch is released, even on flat ground.I changed the belt-no help. The transaxle pulley is engaged, and when I put my hand on the tire, the tire stops...

I don't quite get you, if the belt is running but the rear axle is not turning then your transmission is shot. If the belt is running and the rear axle is spinning with no forward or backward motion, then someone took the back wheels off and put them back on without installing the keyways.

I took off the rear wheel to put air in it and have it poped back on the rim since replaceing the wheel the tractor will not ingage in to foward or reverce gear . is there some trick to this

Often there is a keyway in the axle corresponding to another on the inside of the rim hub. Did you check this and make sure the key is there. If the key is gone the axle's turning will not spin the tire.

Hi
Check to see if any oil leaks between rear wheels where the tractor was parked. Also make sure hydrostatic disengage lever, at rear of tractor by hitch, has to be pushed in.

Wheel wont spin any more...i took it off to fix a flat tire and when i did it was all cool until i put it back and the wheel wont spin any more...why?

it sounds like a spacer or washer is missing causing the bolts to tighten to much on the wheels hub, try to loosen the bolts a little if the wheel spins you know thats the problem and something is missing.
