Sony kdl-46xbr4 Black Horizantal Bands When I First Turn On TV

I have owned my Sony kdl-46xbr4 for 13 months. About a month ago I started seeing horizantal black bands running from right to left across 2/3 of the right side of my TV. It used to last for 2 minutes when I turned on the TV, then the screen would go back to normal. Now the black bands are lasting 10 minutes and 30 minutes. The black bands appear on all inputs (SAT, OTA antennae, etc). They even overlap the words on the Menu Bars when I hit the HOME button on the Sony Remote. Can you diagnose the problem? If so, how much would it cost to repair?

Hi db1975
If the bands overlap the menu and obscure the picture, it can be a couple of things. A bad panel(expensive), a bad TCON board or a bad FB1 board. From the complaint, I'd start with the TCON board. you can get one from here. The other parts can also be sourced this way, much cheaper than direct from Sony. Good luck
Thanks for using FixYa, I am happy to talk further with you regarding this problem.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Your described problem unfortunately may be caused by a faulty LCD panel (most likely) and/or the mainboard (least likely). Surprising though it may be, the cost of repair would be equal to if not greater than the purchase cost. It may be to your advantage to seek assistance from Sony direct and explain your problem. Sony has been known to be extra understanding of similar concerns especially that the unit is only 13 months. You may want to get in touch with Sony Executive Review Committee in Florida to address your concern.

Sorry to be bringing you the bad news. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Since your tv is just 13 months old, in my experience usually the cause of that problem is a cold solder, you need to have that tv repair by a professional tv tech if you don't to troubleshoot it, because the problem of that is internal. I am not 100 percent if it is just a cold solder, because it needs to be checked thoroughly inside. Maybe there's another problem with that, for ex. a leaky capacitor, a shorted transistor. the cost of that is not big enough, because i am certainly sure that its problem is not so complicated, since it is just 13 months in your hands.

Good luck

Most common would problem will be a couple of capacitors in the power supply that are not letting the proper voltage .

Also the horizontal IC is defective you need to replace them .

Sony kdl-46xbr4 Black Horizontal Bands When I First Turn on TV

I had the exact same problem with the Sony KDL46XBR4. The problem started 11 months after I purchased the TV (Dec 2007). Luckily I placed the call to Sony just before the 1 year warranty expired and they replaced the entire front panel which is basically the whole TV except for the stand and the plastic frame. Last month the same issue started happening again (5 months since the repair). I called Sony and they say they have a 90 day warranty on the replacement part so I would need to pay out of my own pocket to first have the problem diagnosed (it's the EXACT same problem!) and then pay to have the repair done since the warranty has expired. I asked how much the front panel costs and it's $1,400! I paid $2,100 for the TV when I purchased it. Interestingly, at the time that part was back-ordered.....hmmmm, I wonder why??? Perhaps a recall is warranted here (no pun intended). Needless to say, I have sworn off Sony products due to their lack of support for this issue.
