How do I install a thermocouple for a patio heater with tilt switch connectors which connector goes to which connector ?

i would say its like a gas valve on a wall heater, You first find the wire that is going to a thermalpile (single wire) if there are three terminals on the gas valve they should be labled TH, TH/TP, and nothing on the other, Thermostat and thermacouple and thermapile get wired with the (th,tp) label or simply together on term.block and the blank with no writing gets other thermastat wire; the label th gets the other thermocouple wire

The pilot and flame dont stay on

Look at label on side of product for Brand, model and type water heater.
Add a comment with that specific information.
Many of the questions I see are shortened to a few words.

If you have Reliance gas water heater with FV system, then clean air intake located on bottom of water heater using feather duster, or compressed air.
Other causes could be FV event that tripped TCO, and/or shorted out gas control valve.
Or you could have bad gas control valve.
Or dirty combustion parts.
Or all the above.

Inspect and clean air intake.on reliance:

My hot water heater won,t stay lit

Question posted under Reliance tank-type gas water heater.
Look at label on side of unit and add comment with brand, model and type heater, because the answer depends on which brand and type water heater you have.
Information below is for Reliance tank-type.

First of all, you need to clean the air intake located on bottom of unit.
The fact that the pilot will light indicates that you are getting gas, but the gas control might be bad, or the unit suffered FV failure from overheated combustion chamber and might require part replacement.
To get a good gauge of situation, clean the air intake first, and then add a comment.
Look at image for inspecting air intake.
Then use feather duster and/or compressed air to clean flame trap, arrestor screen (air intake)

ADD A COMMENT with more detail.

Not heating up water, has power to it and have temp. set at about 135 deg. is there a reset button on it could not find it.

Water heater is not identified.
1) Add a comment with model, brand and energy-type for possible help.

2) Electric tank-type water heater has ECO reset button located on upper thermostat under the top cover.
See images:
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/water-heater-thermostat2.jpg
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Jly-022-thermostat2-175.jpg
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-troubleshoot-electric-problems-with-water-heater.html

3) Gas tank-type ECO varies by brand and model of water heater, and specific identification of gas valve is needed before listing the possible things to look for.

4) Tankless water heater. I suggest calling manufacturer before tearing water heater off wall and throwing away.

My water heater say i have flammable vapors present and is locked out how can i reset it or fix it there are no vapors present

Contact Rheem

Locate product information on label on side of tank.

Typical manuals say if lockout occurs, then refer to gas valve codes and/or troubleshoot section:
http://globalimageserver.com/fetchDocument.aspx?id=a92c7d0e-8a95-48ba-8810-cd714f33d47a
http://globalimageserver.com/fetchDocument.aspx?id=80b1d50e-695f-49ac-9aae-3e9489ef1e5a

For example the manual says:
1. Verify no gasoline or flammable
vapors are present
2. Reset control using ON/OFF switch
on the gas control valve
3. Replace the flammable vapor sensor

I have a Cozy gas heater is there any way of changing the mechanical nob thermostat to a regular wall mount one

need to change the gas valve and add a pilot generator and stat wire and a wall stat. If your unit is natural gas part numbers are gas valve 84085// pilot gen. 70098.

My gas heater won't come on. It's not the therocouple because the pilot is lite. The thermostat on the wall works for my AC. What do I do?

It's possible the gas is just turned off at the heater. Most gas heaters have a valve which turns off the burner while allowing the pilot light to remain lit.

Your heater should have a little decal that tells you how to start it up. It usually involves pressing a big red button while you turn the valve (to prevent accidental turn-on). If your heater has such a label, follow the instructions on it carefully, and the heater should come on.

If that doesn't work - then this is not a good problem to get solved on the Internet. Think about it: if you do something that causes a gas leak, you could be severely injured or killed just by breathing too much of the gas, or lose your home to explosion or fire.

Look for the restart label, but if you don't find it or you follow it and it doesn't work, PLEASE contact a trained plumber who handles gas. Good luck, be safe!

Dayton 3e735 standing wall furnace

Wall furnace? maybe and maybe not! if there is a way it would be on the gas valve and be labeled (though it might be hard to read). often the adjustment screw is under another screw but always labeled.
